Alias, Resurgam
2008 | Label: anticon / IODA

In the atmosphere between hip-hop and electronic music is Alias, crafting moody masterpieces from clattering beats and gauzy layers of synth. He veers all over the stylistic map: "Well Water Black" is eerie and aching, Yoni Wolf's tiny falsetto echoing the pings of a digital xylophone. "Place of No More Choices" hits the other extreme entirely, stop-start rhythms, phased-out synthesizers and gentle, rolling tones. And the title track could be a trip-hop leftover — in the best possible way — a simple acoustic guitar phrase threaded over clambering beats.

Wonderful

Great music that has a little edge but at the same time a groovy and ambient element to it. I like the first track, drum machine and oakland in the rearview mirror.

I thought emusic was dried up

Just when I was about to cancel my subscription I find something like this. It's been awhile since I've been able to go to my ipod and already know what I want to play, lately I've had to scroll top to bottom before I find something. Until now. This is exactly what I need during many parts of the day. Beautiful electronic drum beats added together with synth and keyboards that will put a smile on your face. Death Watch is one of the best songs I've heard in a long time, right when you think it couldn't get better it smacks you square in the face again. Amazing.

This recording just stuck with me and continued to grow on me all winter long. Kept this on the iPod for weeks.

It took me a few listens to fully "get" this album but now that I have I love it. Excellent interplay of drums, synthetics, and voice. Highly recommended.

Just what I needed!

Superdelegate

This album just gets better as you go through the tracks. Plus, Why? is featured, doesn't get any better than that!

Brilliant

This is quite amazing. Break beat with orchestral sighs. Such variety in each piece makes it amazing to listen to. Highly recommended!

I Heart Drum Machine

EMUSIC-00C6EA2D

Fav tracks: Drummachine, deathwatch, Well Water Black (with Why? brilliant), and The Weathering. Alias has been a significant force in my music collection for quite some time. In my mind, he is top of the heap in somber, sometimes dark melodic hip hop infused instrumentalism. Hailing from Maine now in Oakland as one of the founders of Anticon, this is probably up there with Muted and that's saying something! This record builds on previous records and collaborations and truly sees Alias reach his own as an artist. Embracing more instruments, bringing in different vocalists from a variety of genres, When this album soars, you cant help but close your eyes and touch the clouds. well worth the download.

Great record

This is an awesome album to listen to as the summer grinds to a halt. The track with Yoni from Why? is brilliant.

They Say All Music Guide

Heavily influenced by his move back from Oakland, CA, to Portland, ME, Resurgam is left-field hip-hop producer Alias’ homecoming album, one that completes what’s likely an unintentional trilogy of “personal journey” albums. The homesick Muted came first in 2003, then 2005 saw the release of Lillian, a sweet, family-influenced album credited to Alias with his brother Ehren and named after their grandmother. Resurgam — a Latin word meaning “I shall rise again” — features the usual murky, misty, and melancholy touches that characterize Alias’ work, but there’s also a surprising amount of gentle, pleasant music that could help a mixtape transition from Ulrich Schnauss to Röyksopp. “I Heart Drum Machines” features looping keyboard lines that are positively ethereal, while “Weathering,” with special guest the One AM Radio, could be the most “comfy slippers” moment in the whole Anticon catalog. As the Harold Budd-styled piano of “Oakland Morning” gives way to the human beatbox in “MG Jack,” Alias reminds everyone why he belongs on the “avanthop” label, but the line between indie electronic and left-field hip-hop has never been so blurry. This just means the album suits the Anticon crowd to a T and could easily seduce newcomers with a taste for the unclassifiable. Putting paranoia and noir to the side for the moment, Alias has created his most welcoming and positive dream world on Resurgam, an album where the creaks comfort and the low cloud cover comes off as heavenly. – David Jeffries
