Small, odd band with a huge sound
When I first heard MacUmba on a local college station I almost had to stop the car. It was the most magnetic thing that had ever come out of my speakers. Their unique (this word has never been more applicable) blend of instruments from the Celtic traditions, most notably the Great Highland Bagpipe, and the gut-pounding afro-bazilian rhythm section, grant this group a category all its own. No two more disparate and iconic sounds have ever come together so well. If you have any admiration for the plaintive wails of the Scottish Warpipes and enjoy the lively train of a big-hearted Samba, have these guys got a treat for you!
