Touchingly impersonal

I've talked to a few people about this album and it seems to be a you-love-it-or-you-hate-it thing. Tracks 2 and 7 are brilliant -- at least download those if you don't get the whole album. Other highlights are 1, 4, and 10. Off-kilter instrumentation that mixes electronics with standard rock instruments. Extremely understated, deliberately bland vocals.

The Notwist have that incredible ability, which many acts aspire to but few possess, to soothe and also hypnotize. This is a strong brew of musical ideas highly recommended along with almost anything else from this family of artists (Ms John Soda, Lali Puna, Console, et al)

great song,but sound quality issue

Consequence is a great track, but there seems to be a sound quality issue with the encoding, severe static midway through....if resolved, definitely a keeper

Consequence is one of my favorite songs ever....definitely recommended. It's track 10.

Neon Golden was a subtle rewiring of the Notwist’s long-established baroque hip-hop post-rock fetishist technique. The album’s minimal kitchen-sink vibe was stronger, the wide assortment of instruments were arranged with new conviction, and the band would throw in a startlingly unpretentious mixture of tub-thumbing static, cellos, banjos, organs, and breakbeats while Markus Acher’s Belle & Sebastian-styled vocals flowed underneath like island run-off. In “This Room,” “Pick Up the Phone,” “Off the Rails,” and the excellent “Consequence,” the intricacy of the band’s sound remained, but with less experimental desperation and considerably better ideas. – Dean Carlson
