Fine Song Selection

EMUSIC-0095063D

While harmonies have always been a hallmark of Matthew Sweet??s albums ?? either or on his own or various collaborators, like in The Thorns, he??s found a certain magic with Susanna Hoffs. What might be even more important is their excellent song selection! The blend of their voices on ??Warmth of the Sun? is soothing and inviting. Some tracks really allow Hoffs to showcase her talents ?? Different Drum, especially. ??Run to Me? is a haunting choice for a closer.

Oh, Sweet Susanna

Wolf

I've been a Matthew Sweet fan for years, and a Bangles fan, to boot. And I love covers. So, for my money, this is Nirvana. They just nail these songs, brilliantly. I, for one, highly recommend this album, thoroughly.

beautiful and fun

Sweet and Hoffs work together to really capture the fun and energy of these songs. Great selection, great performance. A very enjoyable album to listen to.

Could be (much) better

elspethm

I love Matthew Sweet, and I love covers, but this is really a bad album. The song choices are great, but the versions just aren't strong enough. Please try again, Matthew, maybe with someone else?

Outstanding--But I LOVE covers!!!

Bluesboy

Sweet & Hoffs capture not only the vibe, but the absolute essence of a lot of these tracks. Baby Blue and Warmth of the Sun knock me out!!

Covers gone wrong

I can't imagine worse covers of some of these songs. For some reason I had this nostalgic idea that Hoffs, especially teamed with Sweet, had the kind of voice that would do better with good songs than with her own. It didn't work.

I hate covers too!!

But this one works. I especially like Susanna's vocals on "Who Knows Where the Time Goes".

Sweetness, Indeed!

Postalboy

I bought this the day it was released. A nice mix of familiar and obscure songs from the 60's (except for "Run To Me", from 1972.)Hopefully there is a Volume 2 in the works- their voices blend together nicely!

(and I hate covers!)

Diquehead

Some really good covers here. Sweet & Hoffs blend together well. Highly recommended for dl: "And Your Bird Can Sing," "Cinnamon Girl," "Different Drum." "Run To Me."

eMusic Selects: Army Navy

By J. Edward Keyes, Editor-in-Chief

When we last left Army Navy in 2008, they had released an attention-grabbing, hook-laden bright-n-shiny debut, were racking up placements in high-profile films and seemed to be on a trajectory aimed decidedly upward. But plenty can happen in three years, as it turns out: in the wake of their debut's modest success, Army chief Justin Kennedy found himself swept up in a whirlwind relationship, the kind that kills at the same time as it thrills.… more »

They Say All Music Guide

Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs have always displayed an unapologetic love of ’60s pop in their own music, and they even teamed up as part of the pop supergroup Ming Tea to record the terrific “BBC” for the first Austin Powers film, so the duo’s 2006 album, Under the Covers, Vol. 1, feels logical and right. With this record, the two — who have adopted the name “Sid N Susie,” although this only appears on the inside of the CD’s booklet and on their MySpace page — tackle 15 classic pop and folk-rock tunes from the ’60s (well, the Bee Gees’ “Run to Me” is from 1971, but its heart is in the ’60s). Their selections, a mix of familiar oldies and beloved cult classics, display exceptionally good taste: it’s a mix of the Beatles (“And Your Bird Can Sing”), Bob Dylan (“It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue”), the Beach Boys (“The Warmth of the Sun”), the Who (“The Kids Are Alright”), the Mamas & the Papas (“Monday, Monday”), and Neil Young (“Cinnamon Girl,” “Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere”), plus Love (“Alone Again Or”), the Zombies (“Care of Cell #44″), the Velvet Underground (“Sunday Morning”), Fairport Convention (“Who Knows Where the Time Goes?”), the Stone Poneys (“Different Drum”), the Left Banke (“She May Call You Up Tonight”), and the Marmalade (“I See the Rain”). Not a bad song in the bunch, and the band — a rotating lineup largely comprised of Sweet mainstays including drummer Ric Menck and guitarist Greg Leisz, plus guitarist Richard Lloyd and keyboardist Van Dyke Parks, both appear on a couple of tracks a piece — relish playing songs that they clearly love, since they never reinterpret the songs, or even play around with the arrangements. The affection that Sweet, Hoffs and company display for this music is the reason to hear this record: they’re having such a good time playing their favorite songs, it’s hard not to smile along as well. And if that doesn’t make for a major record, it certainly makes for a likeable one. – Stephen Thomas Erlewine
