An ambitious, skewed pop album that hits a perfect landing
2008 | Label: anticon / IODA

Anathallo don't give away too much of a story. In “Sleeping Torpor,” children hide in a coat rack from a man called “Father”: is he parent or priest, benevolent play partner or menacing monster? In “The River,” a girl washes downstream past felled trees, eroded banks and snagged weeds; is she a leisurely summer swimmer or a corpse in a flood? And in “All the First Pages,” a narrator stumbles upon an odd clipping from a newspaper circa 1979. “An astronaut lost his ring finger to the back of a grain truck,” band members solemnly harmonize over reverbed piano notes and a haze of organ. “And I can't stop thinking about it.” Well, of course you can't stop thinking about it: why in heaven's name would an astronaut have had a farming accident?

Canopy Glow, this Midwestern marching band/freak-folk ensemble's second full-length album, is built to drive meaning-hounds and puzzle-finishers batty. Dazzlingly cryptic and maddeningly obtuse, it's an epic tour through an Americana landscape of tarnished morals and crashed ideals, set in a one-of-a-kind synthesis of pop songcraft, church hymns, folk textures, minimalist cues and modernist tonalities. Some tracks, like “Noni's Field," feature conventional verse-chorus-bridge structures and four-four rhythms; others, like… read more »

This is a guilt pleasure type CD. Lots of talent, but something seem too polished at times. Well worth a listen

Anathallo's Best

hmdesilet

This is one of my favorite albums, not just by Anathallo, but in general. The lyrics and medodies are simply beautiful, and I can listen to this album endlessly. Highly recommended.

Best Album Yet

Freeboopus

This is my favorite album yet from this kickin musical conglomerate out of Michigan. Thoughtful and poetic lyrics blend with eclectic melodies. Download and enjoy!

"Who is that?"

carinnatarvin

I downloaded this album on impulse because of some "if you like this, you'll like this" link, and am pleased that I did. Whenever a song from the album plays in shuffle mode, I am struck by its beauty, and have to check who the artist is. Lovely on Sunday mornings.

should I give it a try?

I was interested in Anathallo because of their music friends Brand New and others, and when I joined I placed this CD in my "Saved For Later" list. Plus the album art is simply intriguing. Granted I didn't give this a chance but nothing seems to pop out at me. (I do listen to my music on shuffle)

Thoughtful indie pop rock: 4.5/5

Simultaneously uplifting and a bit dark. Many nods to pop, but presented in a more introspective manner. A great mix of indie, lush vocals harmonies, and interesting instrumentation. A bit mysterious, too: there seems to be a lot behind the music and lyrics. This isn't a perfect album, and I usually find myself skipping a few tracks. However, the power of tracks 2, 4, and 7 always keep me coming back for more.

Good mix of heaven and earth...

Anathallo has arrived. Eerie and enchanting...they weave a tapestry of wonderment and awe. It's music that's been the soundtrack to many revelations for me.

pretty impressive

I first heard Anathallo's album Floating World, and I loved it. Rarely, though, do I download a second album by a band and love it just as much as the first. Canopy Glow was a pleasant surprise, aand I think some songs, like The River, are even better than anything Floating World had to offer. Good work Anathallo.

Listen to it again!

anthony.dewilde

I was sucked in by the first two tracks. Absolutely amazing songs! However, I did not care for the rest of the album. After being prompted to listen again, I really enjoy this album. Fantastic rhythm (reminds me of The Sea and Cake), great harmony. Multiple instruments and real talent.
