Not that the band sounds like Tokyo Police Club, but both EPs were the proverbial cheesy FM DJ's line, "all killer, no filler" (which is, of course, the strength of EPs). Tokyo Police Club couldn't match the EP with their LP, so here's hoping Surf City can. "Dickshakers Union" is my fave, but for six credits, every song is worth the download.

What a Find...

afternoonhost

Not comfortable with the "sounds-like" type reviews, but I can't help also picking up a little bit on a ca. 1978-1979 Gary Numan/Tubeway Army thing, though not minimalist & automaton-like...I think it's more about a similar vocal style than anything else. Whatever it is, it resonates with my jangled 40-something psyche that was steeped in a strong punk/no-wave brew in its impressionable youth. Invigorating...

Each of these songs is solid, upbeat, and working with other indie music---animal collective, pavement, etc. This excites me like Tokyo Police Club's Lesson in Crime did. Both are short, sweet, and without filler.

Canned Food

nikvision

Canned Food can be exciting. This was my single download. The Jesus and Mary Chain tension is like sweet syrup to those who like it. What really swept me away was the REM like intro and a break that reminded me of the 80's L.A.'s "Missing Persons" This song captures and holds you in 2:12 flat.

Surf City

By Corey duBrowa

With the release of their debut EP, the young Auckland quartet Surf City will stake its claim as the latest/greatest young band to emerge from the island nation known for an indie-rock lineage dating back to Split Enz. The band's origins are like many who've come before: singer Davin Stoddard bought a four-track recorder with a grant meant to purchase books, then brought the others along for the ride. Their sound is uniquely their own,… more »

They Say All Media Guide

New Zealand’s Surf City aren’t doing anything stunningly original on their debut EP, but they are laying some good groundwork for where to go next with their enthusiastic blend of styles and sounds — if anything, they are a classic product of their home country, taking rock & roll inspiration from all over the place and happily transforming it into something that could have only come from their neck of the woods. Perhaps the closest point of comparison on that front would be the 3-D’s, but that’s due less to specific similarities and more to the sheer energy and ragged happy sound of songs like “Headin’ Inside,” which starts the release with scraggled surf guitar and then a big singalong rave-up, and the similarly great “Dickshakers Union” and the slower, majestic “Mt. Kill.” Keyboards spiral and squeal, vocals get a classic heavily echoed touch that makes the whole thing sound all the more live, and the whole is just a delight. If they put their own stamp all the more thoroughly on their next release they’ll be off and running. – Ned Raggett
