A strong ambient debut from Ghostly
2008 | Label: Ghostly International/SMM / IODA

For me, Gas 'ambient classic Pop remains the be-all and end-all for ambient music. The magnification of slight changes, the implied rhythms of found sounds, the beautiful intricacies of so very little. That was the moment when ambient and minimalism best coalesced, for me anyway. All of which is a bit of a daunting introduction for this Sight Below record from Ghostly — except that those qualities referenced before are all over this beautiful sigh of a record. In addition, the Seattle-based artist slips in more rhythm than you might expect, using blinking basses and other implied beats to merely suggest that deep in this shifting fog, there's an anchor after all.

a song to die to..

I heard "already there" last night in the bath tub and really sank into it; felt like i could really..go..to this track. If we should all be this lucky. Some other tracks are sweet as well with the exception of the redundant beats in nearly every track.

Headphone Commute Review

Following up the free digital teaser, No Place For Us EP (Ghostly, 2008), The Sight Below graces our ears with a full length, Glider. The album picks up right where the EP left off - majestic flowing ambient pads spreading over endless soundscapes complimented with an ongoing four/four beat. This is ambient techno at its finest. The lush acoustic guitars are drenched in layers of reverb and luscious background chords. All the instrumentation on the album [sansthe808percussion] was done with a guitar, ebow, viola box, loop pedals, reverb units and a delay box. Minimal, Warm, and exactly what Electronic Ambient is...

Good but not great

Great potential but most tracks feature the same basic beat. Even though it's ambient and rhythm might be besides the point, I wish there was more variety beyond the 4/4 trance-lite thump.

They Say All Music Guide

The work of an anonymous Seattle-based producer with an evident affinity for the outer realms of shoegaze and somber ambient techno, Glider would have been an equally easy fit on Kranky, like label staple Loscil, or an idealized version of 4AD that has maintained the line running through the darker and spacier aspects of their early catalog. Alternately, this is just as likely to evoke the absorbing gray moods present throughout the Cure’s Faith and Seventeen Seconds as thaw-out techno like Yagya’s The Rhythm of Snow or Markus Guenter’s In Moll. Though heavily processed, caressingly foreboding guitars are a major component of the Sight Below sound, the root is Wolfgang Voigt’s Gas releases — whether or not a muffled thump is present, rhythm is paramount. Lesser producers would ride out these tracks for eight or nine minutes, rather than the six-minute average here; this producer keeps things tight and ever-developing, never straying into formlessness. – Andy Kellman
