Mostly Dreck

szarka

I came for #13 and stayed for the delightful irony of #14. #1 isn't bad, though of course both the original and the Soft Cell cover are better. Other than those tracks, not much worth a download...

Pick and choose

Some good, some bad...1,7,9,11,12,13,14 are worth listens in my opinion. So it's about 50/50 here with the good and bad.

Really?

The previous review made me laugh. Worst version of "We didn't start a fire"?? There's never been a decent version because the song is horrible. I have heard many worse covers in my life. Some worth a listen here, but maybe not worth buying.

Another one of those "well we have the rights to a decent cover of "X" now all we need is 14 other covers and we can package an album!"

No they didn't..Opps THEY DID!

This is probably the worst version of "We Didn't Start the Fire" I have ever heard. the other songs were bareable but still pretty bad..

Awful, just awful...

Holy lucifer, stop the music....this album is horrible. Thanks a lot emusic...not only has this scarred my memory of some pretty decent tunes from my teenage years, but some of my favourite artists have done the deed. I would rather shove the sharp end of a 2B pencil into my tympanic membranes than listen to this again. Christ, what have you unleashed here? For a much better covers album, check out nineteeneighties by Grant-Lee Philips.

Not eMusic only

dualistic1981

This is not an eMusic only album, they have the same album on iTunes but with a different bonus track.

Some of the tracks on this album are better than the originals like My Brightest Diamond's version of Tainted Love. The cover is more sophisticated than its original. Also can't get enough of The Bloodsugars and Kaki King tracks.

Alright, I love the Forms.. but that has to be the worst cover of a song ever. Sounds like they did it drunk.

Don’t Forget (The Rest of) The Motor City

By John Morthland, eMusic Contributor

Everybody knows Motown was great, but few realize what an incubator the entire City of Detroit was for soul music in its heyday. For each artist on Berry Gordy’s label there were several more just as good who went with another major, or with a smaller, local indie. Some made their names in r&b, vocal groups or gospel before evolving into soul; others started in soul but had their greatest impact in funk. But even… more »

Rising Tide of Female Jazz Singers

By Dan Ouellette, eMusic Contributor

While the legendary voices of such jazz icons as Billie, Ella and Sarah still ring true, subsequent generations of female jazz vocalists have taken the music in new directions, especially in the '90s, ranging from Cassandra Wilson's new-standard caress to Diana Krall's classics with a twist. Taking their lead, young singers over the last decade have been swinging the vocal tradition onto a new plateau with a pop sensibility. In the mix are tunes by… more »

Townfolk Hip-Hop

By Tambi Younes, Label Relations Coordinator

Nirvana and Pearl Jam. This is who you'll hear about when the topic of Seattle's music scene is brought up in a historical context. It makes sense. Alternative music has always been the face of the Seattle scene. But before Kurt and Eddie, there was Ray and Quincy and Jimi. Seattle has soul, and the hip-hop community in the 206 is the living proof. They love their hometown and the music reflects that. "Townfolk Hip-Hop"… more »

Teenage Graceland

By Wayne Robins, eMusic Contributor

After Elvis went into the Army and before the British Invasion, the years 1958-63 were rock's forgotten years. But they were the years that shaped the musical tastes of baby boomers and of acts from the Beatles and Rolling Stones to Bruce Springsteen and the Ramones. Hear the dance sensations, the one-hit-wonders, the girl groups and doo-wop singers, surfers and rockabilly twangers, the birth of Motown, the evolution of R&B into soul and so much… more »
