Afro-Pop with an Ethiopian Twist
The more I listen to this album the more I like it. It's clear that Minyeshu Gozen has been heavily influenced by the music of her native Ethiopia. Several of the songs here wouldn't sound out of place dropped into the Ethiopiques recordings from the "Golden Age of Ethiopian Music" in the 60s and 70s. "Wosenku" and the title track, in particular, seem very much of that era, as does the smoldering "Tileshign athidq." Elsewhere, tracks like "Afrika" and "Buna" have a more contemporary feel, including a guitar line in "Buna" that seems to borrow heavily from highlife. All in all, this is a splendid record from a star in the making.
