Decemberists, TMBG Primary Influences
Mighty Narwhale is the intersecting area of a Venn diagram of the Decemberists to the left and They Might Be Giants to the right. If you're among the cohort that resides in this area, you'll enjoy, but not be blown away by this album. The tunes are quirky, chief singer Jon Patacky is a John Linnell-Colin Meloy hybrid and the horn-strings mix on most numbers introduces distinctive elements. I'd like to hear more from Collin Bailey, a solid compliment to Patacky in the Sasha Bell/Jenny Lewis mold.
