A brilliantly mixed-up girl makes a brilliantly mixed-up record
2008 | Label: IAMSOUND Records

Little Boots — otherwise known as Victoria Hesketh — occupies a uniquely jumbled sonic space. As a teenager growing up in Blackpool, she shuttled between kitschy Eurotrance clubs and rehearsals with assorted punk outfits while studying classical music and making money from jazz. That wide-ranging mix is carried onto her debut EP, Arecibo. As she sings in a potentially autobiographical line on "Stuck On Repeat", one of the featured tracks, "She's a mixed-up girl in mixed-up world, and you know she don't mean any harm."

Produced by Joe Goddard of Hot Chip and Greg Kurstin of The Bird and the Bee plus remixes by Fake Blood and Ebola, the very mutant Arecibo is appropriately reminiscent of the disco-not-disco, punk-funk and electro-funk sound that came out of the punk-disco exchange of the late 1970s and early 1980s. "Stuck On Repeat" is built around a synth line that echoes — but doesn't quite copy — the oscillating Moog of Donna's Summer's "I Feel Love". Slowed to a slur and heavy with effects, the reference blunts the euphoria of disco with a post-disco heaviness. On "Meddle", an attack of thick, distorted synth lines contrasts with improbably melodious vocals in which… read more »

Stuck on Repeat!

wavfarer

The original is superb slow epic bassey goodness with a sweeping 2.5 minute breakdown build that's sure to melt faces and a really catchy Pop female vocal. The Fake Blood remix is solid electro-house with some fun twists and turns but to me the original blows it out of the water. >FUNMUSICFUNMUSICFUNMUSIC

What makes her special?

zerotolerance

The internet. This girl knows how to use the internet to make herself into a phenomenon. She's already made tv appearances on Later with Jools Holland and Last Call with Carson Daly. She wants to be a pop star. She wants to do something different. She's making it happen. Funny how a few home videos can kick start a career. I like it when she stays away from the high notes. These tracks are well suited for her voice and she's fun.

The Future, LOL

It seems she is being given way too much attention. She must have a great publicist though!

The future? Oh dear...

So, Little Boots has been named "THE FUTURE" by BBC 6Music, who polled a few industry insiders. What's so special? I downloaded the song "Stuck on Repeat" from a rival website who are currently offering it as their free single of the week. I was expecting something staggering, but instead got a (rather cheesy and somewhat generic) dance track. I couldn't sit through all of it I'm afraid. Compared with the rest of the 6Music shortlist, this is dire. Florence & the Machine are far superior in my opinion, and even Empire of the Sun are better to my ears (for a sub-MGMT) - despite their almost toe-curlingly retro sound.

Not your everyday dance track

ayupmeduck

If fact substancially better that your everyday club/dance track. Not quite sure what she draws on, it's easier to say what this is not, and this is not cheap eurotrance. Oh, just download track 1 to start, if you like dance music at all, you'll love this.

Who Is … Little Boots

By Tim Lawrence

"If you listen to my pop, you can tell it comes from a slightly weird place," says Victoria Hesketh, the solo artist behind Little Boots. That slightly weird place might include Hesketh's hometown, the northwest English seaside resort of Blackpool, where creaking fairground attractions blend with time-warp ballrooms and shrill amusement arcades. It also encompasses a musical childhood that spanned classical music and jazz, as well as teenage years spent ricocheting between punk and Euro-trance.… more »
