This is a true highlight of the early Zorn. It is almost exclusively hard bop, and it does show that Zorn can play inside.

Voodoo = 6 credits?
Why is the song Voodoo worth 6 credits, and the rest of the album combined is also 6 credits? Must be a pretty good song!
Great record, now go back and get Sonny Clark
I thought this was a great record. It made me go back and find out who Sonny Clark was and get his records, too.
Accessible and Adventurous
This album reflected John Zorn's flirtation with the music of Sonny Clark. Despite Zorn's reputation as a downtown NYC skronker, he respects Clark's compositions and does not stray too far from the hard bop approach. The results are accessible, thanks to Sonny Clark's tunes, and adventurous, thanks to the playing of Zorn and his fine group. P.S. By all means, do check out "News for Lulu," also a fine album. And buy the Blue Notes.

While "Voodoo" is mildly interesting, "News For Lulu", & the live "More News for Lulu" are even more so; the "no rhythm section" concept challenges Zorn, Lewis & Frisell. and the choice of material will make you want to: get those Blue Notes!

Respectfully, I disagree with mailman. I think Zorn and company pull off a helluva an album that upstages most of those great funky 50s Jazz lps if not Sonny's too! Zorn is out of his mind and earns a whole lot of respect. I suggest you skip the trio's "News for Lulu" on the hat label that is not available to eMusic. It lacks the rhythm section, and you have to put up with Frisell's wimpy wispy guitar. He is completely lost. F Bluenote. ;)

I've had this on LP for ages, but have never seen it on cd, so imagine my surprise when is shows up here. This is a great precurser to the Zorn/Lewis/Frisell News for Lulu recordings on Hat Art.
