Sweet Soul Perfection

Great arrangements, strong songwriting, and impeccable vocals--this is fine late 60s sweet soul. Unfortunately the Brothers never made it big and are best remembered (if at all) for "Guess That Don't Make Me a Loser." That's a good song, but this collection has even better treasures. "Love is Fever," "You Better Believe It," and "Lifetime" are all excellent, and only a couple of tracks are duds. If you like the Intruders, Marvin Gaye, the Dynamics, etc. then you want this album!

Not a loser at all...

This was a Detroit group that was neglected due to so many offerings coming from "Motown". Other Detroit labels and groups had to fight hard to get any airplay and sales. Fred Bridges recalls how they named the group, "During the (1967) riots many shops and stores were daubed with the words 'Soul Brother' in the hope that looters and arsonists would leave them alone. I played on the words and came up with The Brothers of Soul." On this compilation of singles, four songs really stand out. The title track is a declaration of how love changes a man and a remembrance of that lost love. "Dream" has a strong samba style beat for a steady dance tune. "Candy" is a smooth ballad about the girl "that's all mine." "Can't" Get You Out of My Mind" has a solid hook that stays with you. Sadly, solid musical groups may truly be a dying art in this era of looks and sonic tricks over musical talent. Download this if you love good solid soul music.
