Singer-songwriter nails poignancy, and does perky even better
2008 | Label: Cabin 24 Records / CD Baby

Staten Island singer-songwriter Ingrid Michaelson is great at poignant. She nails poignant. "I just wanna be ok, be ok, be ok, today," she sighs over and over again. And you feel for her, you really do. And her cover of "I Can't Help Falling In Love With You" is so pristine, pretty and gut-wrenching, you actually pay attention to lyrics for the first time in years. But, her finest moments are these upbeat-ish little pop tunes, like "Giving Up" and "Lady in Spain," ones tireless enough to drag and drop onto your road-trip playlist. Be OK, with all its covers, rarities and live tracks — including a charming re-up of the 2007 hit-via-Old-Navy-commercial "The Way I Am" — was probably intended merely to stoke the fires until a proper follow-up to Girls and Boys could be conjured. But thanks to some memorable choruses and Michaelson's twinkling chandelier voice, Be OK (which benefits Stand Up to Cancer) manages to overcome its odds-and-ends origins to strive for something more essential."You And I," a catchy-as-cooties duet with producer Dan Romer is simple and sweet. "Maybe I think you're cute and funny," she croons over a polite ukulele."Maybe I wanna do what… read more »

You can't go wrong with an album by Ingrid. She has a great voice, delivery and lyrics. I really love this album.

I stumbled onto Ingrid Michaelson and have really enjoyed her music. I use "Be OK" as an alarm sound to wake me up.

The Chain

check out "the Chain". I liked the 30 second demo and downloaded but was blown away when it played on my headphones at work a couple days ago.

It's OK

I am a fan of Ingrid Michaelson. I especially enjoy her original music. I found this album somewhat thin, in sound and content, compared to her others. It has consistently grown on me, but very, very slowly. As a sucker for duets with a male and a female voice, You and I (track 10) is probably my favorite on this album.

And I love it! Clubbaker said the title track is strangely infectious, I think the entire album and all of Ingrid's works are strangely infectious! Check out her other album "Girls and Boys", It's great as well!

Really good album

clubbaker

Although this is not here most consistent album, Be OK is a really good album. The title track is strangely infectious, as is worth the price of the entire album alone.

Wonderfully Surprised

Anyone can tell you that I, as a nearly 30 year old man, am not prone to listening to bubble gum twee pop. This album, despite having moments of sugary sweetness, truly shows potential for greatness yet to come. I would also be interested to hear Ingrid branch out into blues and jazz in the future, as she seems the type who could really open up to her voice's fuller potential in those genres given the chance.

When the Hotel CafĂ© became a nationally recognized launching pad for songwriters in 2008, Ingrid Michaelson stood out amongst artists who regularly played the venue, flaunting a confident sound that was a cut above the average female crooner. Her second indie album, Girls and Boys, made waves one year prior when it topped the iTunes charts, eventually selling over 740,000 copies of its lead single thanks to licensing deals with Old Navy and Grey’s Anatomy. Released in 2008, Be OK continues her Norah Jones-gone-pop approach with 11 tracks. This isn’t a proper studio effort — rather, it’s a benefit project (with proceeds going to cancer research) that takes its material from live performances, rarities, and several new tracks. Filled with handclaps and breezy guitar chords, the titular “Be OK” bookends the set list with two different versions — one filled with harmonies, keyboards, and percussion, and the other sticking closer to an acoustic arrangement. Michaelson’s voice is strong enough to carry those tracks alone, but her melodies sound strongest when flanked by harmonies, whether they’re provided by the singer’s own double-tracked voice or contributions from her touring bandmates. “The Chain,” a longtime live favorite and perhaps the best song on this disc, even careens into a three-person round, utilizing the harmony approach better than any Michaelson track since “The Way I Am.” She leads the pack, advising her ex-lover to “glide away on soapy heels” while her melodies are echoed by Bess Rogers and Allie Moss. It’s a simple song, but its presentation makes all the difference — a telltale sign of a songwriter who knows how to breathe new life into a veteran genre. – Andrew Leahey
