ECM's first release

Fitterstoke45

ECM 1001 - for that was its LP catalogue number - proved an auspicious start for one of the most distinctive and quality-controlled labels in jazz. Waldron had an impressive pedigree with his CV of solo, Mingus, Coltrane and Billie Holiday sessions, and here created a fine, if somewhat understated, record of pieces far more accessible and enjoyable than the album's title suggested. Sadly, this was the beginning and end of Mal's ECM career, aside from launching ECM's JAPO offshoot with the stunningly adventurous 'The Call' two years later. Should that amazing record ever surface on eMusic, download without hesitation. In the meantime, this is well worth investgating - especially the long tracks that commmenced both sides of the original LP.

The very first ECM release (which has been reissued on CD), this trio set features pianist Mal Waldron, bassist Isla Eckinger and drummer Clarence Becton improvising quite freely on five of Waldron’s compositions plus “Willow Weep For Me.” The music overall is not that memorable or unique but it does have its unpredictable moments and finds Waldron really stretching himself. – Scott Yanow
