More gorgeous dispatches from BoB's world of sweet, sad whimsy
2008 | Label: Breathe Owl Breathe

Micah Middaugh, the gangly, loose-limbed lead singer and guitarist for Breathe Owl Breathe (onstage, he exudes the demeanor of an enthusiastic, over-grown lab puppy), told us last year when BoB became an eMusic Selects band that he didn't speak a word until he was four years old. As he explained to us, "I kinda felt like everything around me was — I felt like I was taken care of. In those four years, it was a lot of touch and smell and taste — I was just taking it in." Listening to the Ghost Glacier EP, and now this full-length, you get the feeling, maybe, that this gentle sense of well-being and wonder is the secret to — something, anyway, and that this "something" might help explain why his simple, communal folk-pop songs are so disarming. His lyrical world is full of fearsome sabretooth tigers who only wish to attend school; lovelorn, lonely pirates searching despondently for treasure; and overgrown baseball diamonds where divorced fathers play half-hearted catch with their sons — in other words, a world where whimsy and pathos live in the same breath, and neither trip over each other into treacle.

Great! Love it!

I recently met these guys. The recorded music can only eclipsed by their glowing faces and great live set. Great people. Great music. Definitely worth getting. Micah (guitar/vocals) also does the art and slik screening for their albums and t-shirts.

Sounds Like Northern Michigan

shuttkar

Breathe Owl Breathe continues to exercise imagination and what can be done with music on this latest record. The three bandmates mix and meld rootsy-nature folk songs that echo a northern Michigan feeling. The band is entertaining live but also can create one unique studio album. The music is playful, new and necessary. Enjoy Micah, Andrea and Trevor. They are sure to please.

A Great Folk Album

ChronoSquall14

If you already have the EP just get the new tracks and meld your old songs in, since these are either the exact same recordings or are only marginally different. The new tracks here are excellent across the board, from the jazzy "Last Dance" to my personal favorite, "Baseball Diamond." I can't listen to that song and NOT feel the warm summer air, the wet grass soft beneath my feet, the sun beating down. Breathe Owl Breathe flesh out their ideas from the EP and make one of the very best of 2008.

Are the tracks from the EP the same?

I LOVE the emusic-only Ghost Glacier EP. So glad that the rest of the world will have a chance to hear these songs. Wondering if I should DL the whole album, or just the tracks that don't appear on the EP. Anyone know if the EP songs like "Sabertooth Tiger" "Drop and Roll" and "Playing Dead" are identical on this release? thanks!

One of my favorite albums from start to finish... I can't help but smile as I sing along. Turn the sprinkler on.
