David Cloyd, Unhand Me, You Fiend!
2009 | Label: Engine Company Records

Having recently departed New York City for Buffalo, you can almost hear the isolation in David Cloyd's debut. Unhand Me, You Fiend! jumps between folky, Jeff Buckley-esque ballads, minor-key raucous indie-guitar workouts and, errr, a Radiohead cover (that's actually quite great!). It seems the work of a single, quirky mind with a lot of time on its hands — and it's a joy to listen to.

One of my favorites

Great album, a rare find! It's hard to believe that it was recorded by just one person (David Cloyd) in his tiny NY apartment. Waiting for the second album from David.

eMusic at its BEST

DonnaBella

This is the kind of album that eMusic has been great for. I hadn't heard of Cloyd, but his exposure on eMusic (and his rise to #1 on the Album Charts) caught my eye. I joined eMusic for exactly this kind of discovery. My music library, and my listening are both richer for it. I hope eMusic doesn't abandon the Indie-Listeners out here, or the quality Indies like Cloyd who deserve our attention.

Every song brings something new

mattyx

Whether its Cloyd's voice, the unique drum effects (think David Gray, but with better programming) or the great production, its hard not to find something remarkably likeable from start to finish. Each song has a unique flavor, while maintaining a consistent feel throughout the album. Cloyd handles each song deftly. He brings full verve to distortion-drenched indie-rockers like Come Out Wherever You Are. Yet, it's hard not to sing along to his tender falsettos when he sings "Think of your head, tomorrow's worn you down already; go to sleep instead" in acoustic winners like Give Your Enemies a Chance to Rest. Beautiful from start to finish.

Repeated listens...

RiledUp

This is an album that only deepens with repeated listens. Each song is a highlight-in-itself, capped off with one hell of a cover. Jeff Buckley meets Radiohead, sure...with echoes of Peter Gabriel too. A welcome debut, with hopes of more from Cloyd.

Great Songs!

brit rock, electroacoustic folk, epic wall of sound - whatever it is you want, there are at least a couple of somethings on here for everyone. and a very cool pared-down radiohead cover!

Shock and Awe

Grabbed the free track when the album first posted and was blown away...downloaded the entire album, and what a great record top to bottom. The Radiohead cover is chilling and beautiful. I've never seen an "audio commentary" for an album before...what a great idea. I'm looking forward to living with this one for a long time.

WOW!!!

What a great way to start the year!! I downloaded "Never Run" first and loved it... so I got the whole album and it's incredible! I highly recommend listening to this one from beginning to end. It has moments of Radiohead, Beck, John Lennon, Jose Gonzalez, Elliott Smith, Peter Gabriel -- and there's even an amazing cover of Radiohead's Weird Fishes! Great stuff. Cool audio commentary about the making of the album too. What a great eMusic find!
