This is an outstanding album from an incredibly talented singer-songwriter who has the perfect knack for writing and singing songs that reach out and grab the listener. His songs are not quickly forgotten, once heard. This is an album with real staying power and I would rank it was one of my 'desert island' picks.
Maybe I'm biased, but Pierce Pettis is one of my favourite singer-songwriters, I've been buying every one of his albums, ever since Chase the Buffalo. State of Grace is one of my favourite songs of all time (not on this album). Pierce has started all his albums since the death of singer Mark Heard, with a cover of a Mark Heard song. If you are a mark heard fan, that's enough to endear you to Pierce Pettis right there. I am a Mark Heard fan. It's good to know someone else remembers, and grieves the loss, as I still do. "To dance" is a great first song if you want to give him a try. Warren
Once again, Pierce Pettis has created a beautiful album. His unique approach to common songwriter themes on this album is superb. It's not particularly different than his previous four albums, but the songs remain strong. Perhaps "Nothing But the Wind" is one of his best Mark Heard covers, and "Something for the Pain"'s vernacular reaches deep into the Nashville songwriting tradition. Good stuff.
