Great recordings, but...

MarkD

Wonderful old 78 rpm recordings of African music. However, after downloading volume 1, I discovered that nearly every track (also those on volume 2) comes from other releases, most notably the outstanding "Secret Museum of Mankind" on Yazoo and "Musique Populaire Africaine 1926-1952" on the French Buda label (which also did the excellent Ethiopiques series) - both are available on eMusic. Probably all of this stuff is out of copyright and it may be vaguely legitimate to copy, but I was disappointed - someone (especially Pat Conte, creater of the Secret Museum) put a lot of effort into compiling those CDs. These downloads seem like a rip-off, at least at first glance. Perhaps I'm mistaken and they were legitimately cross-licensed or something...if so, I apologize. Anyway, the music is great, but I would recommend getting the Secret Museum series instead (there's *so* much more great music there), supplemented by the Buda compilation.
