Dubstep meets Arabian
Remembering Machine is a development in Secret Archives’ sound; they’ve clearly been listening to and absorbing the sounds and textures of glitch and dubstep and these have been merged with the world fusion sounds that they are known for. A couple of tunes are fairly straight (but very good) dubstep – the opener , Cryptonomicon, and the title track, Remembering Machine. Before Beauty revisits the Arabian feel of many tracks on their 2008 outing, Babylon Halt, while Beloved features some tastefully played fretless guitar. The dub feel hasn’t been abandoned either - Dread, Pity the Fool and Gangs of New Earth all chug along with rolling Laswell-esque basslines and a funky reggae electronica vibe. Overall the album feels both futuristic and somehow ancient – and that is expressed in the album’s title, Remembering Machine.
