Beguiling and dreamy art-rock that both earns and transcends its Radiohead comparisons
Label: TBD Records / ATO

Radiohead comparisons are inevitable when sizing up the debut LP by Other Lives. The virtuosic use of cello, violin, piano and organ, combined with proggy grandiosity; a lead singer (Jesse Tabish) whose voice is freighted with weary, Yorke-ian woe; backhanded sentiments like "Anyone can change/ If your life's not over." (Gulp.) Both bands are even on the same label.

But this Stillwater, Oklahoma, quintet deserves praise on its own merits. Other Lives demonstrates genuine musical chops — sporting songs that should appeal to anyone who admires the intricacy and pan-musicality of acts like Sufjan Stevens and Andrew Bird. "Matador" is by turns flamenco-inflected and, thanks to a lone trumpet, noirish. The desultory "AM Theme" sounds like some lost classic from the heyday of '70s AM radio. "Black Tables" is stark and raw, with Jenny Hsu's cello nurturing a sense of doom.

The music supervisors at Grey's Anatomy tapped the latter for an episode in which Derek (Patrick Dempsey) dies on the operating table. Turns out it was just Grey (Ellen Pompeo) having a bad dream (or a bad McDreamy?), but the pairing of Other Lives with a sequence about the dread buried in one's subconscious feels right. When it sounds… read more »

Old Soul

fethan

Some bands are able to rework the successful facets of past music to create something original and wonderful and hauntingly familiar. If it is possible in the short history of rock and roll to describe a band as having an "old soul", Other Lives may be worthy of the title. Derivative and thank god for that. I know what I like, and this has a hell of a lot of what I like in it.

i'm lovin it

like the mcdonalds ad that says "i'm lovin' it", this is how i feel about other lives and their soothing sounds of goodness. vocals take me back to roots rock and the lyrics draw me in like a nice toke.

Thought I did, I thought I did

fulofunk

I Dl'd this after a few clips and the last of my Dl's left. The clips sounded good and the vocals were nice, but after one listen through, I was done. Nothing was very catchy after the first few songs, and I got bored....I don't think I vere did finish listen through.....sorry guys

Shoe-gazey indie pop

okayfine

Dreamy and enjoyable. The piano and cello are what make this so lovely for me. Favorites: "E Minor" and "Black Tables."

Pretty good

Honestly these guys sound like a more well produced version of Midlake than Radiohead. There are a couple chord changes that are reminiscent of Radiohead, but the vocals and the texture of the strings/piano/guitar are more Midlake-ish. Overall good writing and performance and production are great, not a lot of hooks, but its definitely a good listen

Comparisons

lkgrimes

If a comparison is to be made, I would argue that these guys are a lot more like Midlake, than Radiohead or Coldplay. Don't believe me? Download The Trials of Van Occupanther, NOW. Go ahead, I'll wait... ...That being said, these guys are a little something different, combined with a little something borrowed from lots of other great sounds. If you're into the whole moody rock sound produced independently (who isn't???), then you've stumbled across a very solid effort, from a very solid band.

Not radiohead, but just as good

AstralGlamBoy

I think the radiohead comparison, is wrong. There is a little pink floyd in there, but this album is pure American in the tradition of great bands that can blend country, rock, and folk with the spatial melancholy of shoe-gazers. This album is full of catchy tunes. I can't seem to quite it.

Excellent! Come to PDX

Love the album! Love it. Love it. Love it. E Minor and Black Tables are my favorites. The cello is haunting and romantic twisted together. Keyboards are fabulous! Love the overall instrumental compositions.
