I love this album
It has a real atmosphere that continues across the entire album. It holds together like it is one piece, it all truly belongs together and flows. It is beautiful.

It's hard to characterize CD's music. Rozz and Valor distinctions notwithstanding, the majority of their albums (on either side) could be described as having occasional gems amongst some of the most unlistenable crap ever made. That said, this is not the case with Catastrophe Ballet. Along with Only Theatre of Pain (and possibly The Wind Kissed Pictures EP) Catastrophe is one of those rare masterpieces that really seals CD's place in the gothic pantheon. None of these albums has ever been convincingly imitated or innovated by another band. CD is NOT a great (or even very good) band imo, but they did manage to make a few legendary albums...and this is one of them.
I totally agree with Allegory. I bought this on vinyl at the Carnival of Atrocities Fayre at the Camden Electric Ballroom ('86?) just before they came on stage. I listened to it again recently after not having done so for 20 years or so (when I used to cane it), and I could still recall every word and riff. Absolutely wonderful.
Track 1 was not originally part of this album. Tracks 2 through 11 compose one of the best albums put out by any band ever. This is one of a handful of albums that made Rozz a legend (as opposed to the slew of albums that merely served to cash in on his name). If you are curious about Christian Death, get this album before all the rest. Get Decomposition of Violets and Only Theater of Pain next. Ashes is worth having too but the copy on Emusic is missing tracks - get it at your local record store.
