Sufjan Stevens, Songs For Christmas
Label: Asthmatic Kitty Records / SC Distribution

Recorded in annual batches since 2001 (although for some reason skipping 2004), Songs for Christmas stands as a monumental effort. Sufjan recorded much of the material at home and plays the majority of the instruments. Seventeen of the forty-two numbers are originals. His friends Matt Morgan and Vito Aiuto dropped in to sing, but otherwise all the vocals are Sufjan's.

The music itself is an ideal Christmas stocking, packed with traditional tunes, original songs, poems and stories, and cool little instrumentals. The music feels as personal as the way it was recorded — not only the originals, but Sufjan's interpretations as well. Even the clichéd songs, the sort of awful ones you've heard a gazillion songs in your life already, sound darn good here. It's hard to do that oft-played song justice, but his banjo-driven "Amazing Grace” is very moving.

In a way that's both calculated and visceral, Sufjan really connects with the true joy of the holiday — even the Heatmiser or the Grinch would be won over by this thing. The songs are chimey and cheery and there's something about them that instantly announces “Hey, it's Christmas!” Approaching the greatness of holiday albums from … read more »

Xmas Classic

tommyv

One of my favorite modern Christmas collections. It's got the perfect combination of bemusedment, reverence, and whimsy. If you have to pick and choose, here are my recommendations: "O Come O Come Emmanuel" (the long version on disc 1), "Holy Holy Holy" (long version on disc 5), "What Child Is This Anyway?," "Away In a Manger," the originals "That Was the Worst Christmas Ever!" and "Sister Winter," his sublime version of "Joy to the World." Oh, heck, get "Amazing Grace" too - it's lovely. If you only have a buck, get his original song "Sister Winter" and bask in its awesomeness. This song brings me to tears every time I hear it.

Good, and expensive

Great Christmas CD. We need more good new takes on the Christmas music genre. I do have to agree with the hate for the new pricing, but that has little to do with music. The pricing will work itself out or E-music will have a retention problem

Tedious

Even for a Sufjan fan in the Christmas spirit, this was too much.

Seriously, $13.99 on Amazon?!?

I bought this album to burn some credits... but this just isn't sustainable long term.

The Best of the Season

These 5 discs are by far the best Christmas collection I've ever heard. Some songs are repeated, but different arrangements make them all sound fresh and fun!

Mixed Feelings Here

I enjoy Sufjan a lot, but this set is pretty spotty. Moments of the Sufjan I love mixed with very humdrum plucky do. I'm glad for the ones I really like.

don't know how I missed this up to now...

wow, this is an impressive collection, and a nice way for me to finally properly 'discover' Sufjan. Recommended for sure.

Once again, perfection.

I love Sufjan's eclectic style, his sensitivity to beauty, his humor, and his poetic and homespun lyrics. This is once again a fantastic synthesis of all these things. Already some of my favorite Christmas music.
