Samantha Crain, Songs In The Night
Label: Ramseur Records / Thirty Tigers

"It's a perfect day for dying" croons Samantha Crain on her full-length debut, Songs in the Night. With her Jolie Holland-style twang and dexterous backing band, Crain manages to make this ominous statement sound sweet and warm—her songs evoke comfy sweaters rather than cold nights. The title track is the perfect antidote for loneliness, with its jangly rhythm and its reassuring refrain, "Yeah, my baby's gonna be alright."

This girl was a find...

The two Samantha Crain albums here epitomize what is awesome about eMusic. I doubt I would have heard this music without this site. Some months are better than others but every now and then I get really excited about an artist or album I "discovered" here, and this is an example. Easily worth 11 credits.

Sweet Surprise

I did about 6 music searches to track this artist down. Heard the new single "Santa Fe" on our local public station (KUT in Austin, TX) and was totally mesmerized. Alas, Santa Fe is not yet available for purchase...too new?...but I did spend some time listening to older albums and really like this artist.

Wonderful Live

Ewessel

Saw Samantha and the Midnight Shivers open for Josh Ritter in State College, PA. They were really fantastic and put on a wonderfully rich live show. I definitely recommend this album. Especially for those chill summer evenings that drift away... I'm recommending this album to my friends at Ignatius Record Review online for them to take a look.

36 Songs To Soothe the Pain

By eMusic Editorial Staff, eMusic Contributor

Whether you're happily married or told Cupid to shove it a long time ago, we can all agree on one thing: to quote the one-and-only Nazareth, "Love hurts/ Love scars/ Love wounds/ And mars." Or something. That's why we went ahead and compiled a list of 36 Songs To Soothe the Pain, from the bloodletting confessionals of Neko Case, Bright Eyes and Sunny Day Real Estate to the melancholic melodies of Sigur Rós, the Shangri-Las… more »
