Florence Welch is pure spirit. Unencumbered by the limitations of mere mortals, she breathes the divine directly from her lungs. Her haunting vocal flourishes range from aching to ecstatic, and, combined with her passionate lyrics and shattering live performances, they skyrocket her alt-folk-garage-blues-pop songs past other limey chanteuses who have recently been bathing in critical high praise (see: Adele, Duffy, etc.). "Dog Days" and "Kiss With A Fist" are high-energy romps, Florence taking off on aerial reveries, her voice soaring up into the heights only to bring on a sudden, climactic crash with an onslaught of drums and punishing rhythms. "Dog Days" is a call to arms, a reminder of release, a freedom bell, while "Kiss With A Fist" is a swinging, garage-fuzzy stomp through a relationship's cuts and bruises. The B-sides "You've Got the Love" and "Hospital Beds" are more reserved and melancholic. The former is a choir song mixed with righteous country fervor. The foot-stomping chorus of "Hospital Beds" provides a solid, heartwarming foundation for Florence's high frequency, vocal acrobatics.
