Not my cup of tea. The idea that this "surpasses autechre" is patently absurd and not appropriate, and only cements "headphone commute's" status as a lame uncritical source. This album sounds derivative; track 5 is just plain corny; and i couldnt make it through the whole thing. boring.
Fantastic. Similar and equal in wow to my Murcof and Beefcake. Great adventures that help me create. While a lot of experimental electronic veers violently into fromage-- Hecq steers straight and consistent. Love all of Hecq's stuff.
I didn't download this album for a long time because the samples weren't convincing me. It was a mistake. Artists seem to produce beautifully dark work for the Hymen label and this is one of the best examples. There's Autechre-like percussion mangling and an absolute rip-snorter of a breakcore track (howler). But it's the dark ambience that everything resides within that elevates this album, the pads are deep and the sound design generally is some of the finest you'll come across. Only annoying thing is the prospect of having to purchase 12 remixes to get the last track...come on emusic, give us a break eh?
Hecq... Have you heard? If you haven't, it's time to jump on board. And by the way, you're missing out! After all, this is Hecq's sixth full length release (fifth on Hymen Records). Dare I say it the following way : with Steeltongued, Hecq surpasses the leaders in electronic experimentation, Autechre, leaving them in the dust to scratch their heads in awe of this twenty-seven year old Berlin based musician. Like a villain of traumatized sonic disintegration, Ben Lukas Boysen unwinds the tight coils of sound into distinct entities of material forms and packs them away into carefully allotted spacial frequency shelves.
