Tony Allen keeps on shakin' with his best since his 1999 comeback
2009 | Label: World Circuit / IODA

At an age when many would have retired, Tony Allen returns with his most consistent album since the 1999 comeback Black Voices. As on Lagos No Shaking (2005), he revisited his hometown of Lagos in Nigeria to make this record, and again, rather than exploiting his celebrity connections with Damon Albarn et al., he shares the limelight with a big posse of local talent.

Just as the music mixes up African and African-American references, the five guest singers slip between Yoruba, English and Broken English — often within the same song — complementing the driving flow of Allen's subtle-but-solid kit work. With appearances on four tracks, Oribiyi Adunni (a.k.a. Ayo) performs the lion's share of the vocals, and is especially impressive on "Ayenlo". Fans of Jill Scott will recognise a kindred spirit in Bola Dumoye ("Switch"), and King Odudu has Femi Kuti's tone and Fela's languid charm on "Celebrate". Co-producer Fixi's arrangements feature wonderful horns throughout, often sparring with a chorus of backing singers, and he also manages a battery of instruments, including an accordion, which is rather novel for Afrobeat.

As Ayo puts it, it's the "rhythm of pleasure" and Secret Agent is very easy on the ear, even… read more »

They Say All Music Guide

It’s no surprise that Tony Allen’s new album does nothing to dim his reputation as one of the world’s greatest drummers. He’s the personification of subtlety, leading from the back and carefully pushing and prodding the music, but doing this so cleverly that half the time people don’t even notice he’s there. He’s certainly a man whose four limbs operate independently, setting up cross- and counter-rhythms that add extra levels of texture and complexity to the music. On Secret Agent, recorded in his native Lagos, he’s joined by a number of guests (including five different vocalists), but the core musicians working with him are producer Fixi, who contributes several instruments, and Cameroonian guitarist Claude Dibongue, who works well in this framework. It’s largely Afrocentric, and definitely political, in the best tradition of Allen’s late employer, Fela Kuti. Allen himself contributes vocals to the opening and closing tracks, showing he’s more than a drummer, even if his voice is low-key. That he plays so well is remarkable. That he does it like this when he’s almost 70 is amazing. – Chris Nickson
