Bob Dylan, Saved
Label: Columbia

Dylan's second Christian album retraces rock's path through R&B to gospel — he's got a handful of soul veterans in the band, and "Solid Rock" grooves like nothing else he's recorded. The lyrics are undiluted born-again dogma, which shocked fans who were used to Dylan's don't-follow-leaders irreverence. But a lot of these songs make more musical sense if you consider them as a Dylanization of the black gospel of the '40s and '50s.

From the Heart

docdanley

I love the raw emotion that Dylan projects through these songs. They come from the soul of one who has been deeply affected by Christian faith. The tracks vary greatly in style, which is a credit to the artist's creative genius and versatility. I have loved this album since it was first released, in the '70s, I believe.

Fullness of Dylan's gospel mission

LouietheKing

I love Slow Train Coming but that record is full of using Christianity to scourge the money-changers out of the Temple--so a lot of people can dig the "Protest Dylan is back" aspect of it even if they can't stand Christ. The songs on Saved on the other hand refrain for the most part from secular political critique and speak from the heart of the rewards of the interior spiritual life of someone who loves God. With New Morning, his happiest album.

Preferred "Slow Train Coming"

RogerEllisB

As a Christian who doesn't normally care that much for Bob Dylan, I admit an amazing affinity for "Saved" and "Slow Train Coming." Must admit the latter has more playful music than "Saved," though.

unlistenable

other than "solid rock', simply unlistenable. he made some great music during his "jesus years"--this isn't it.

Underrated Indeed

"Pressing On" is especially beautiful.

May Your Song Always Be Sung

By Douglas Wolk, eMusic Contributor

"Singer/songwriter" has gradually come to be applied to nearly everyone who both writes and performs songs, especially if they happen to play guitar and are billed under their own names rather than as members of a band. But it used to have a particular meaning, in some cases, that was a little more specific: a singer who performed self-written songs that were meant for other people to sing, too. That's a tradition that's not nearly… more »

Top 10 Overlooked Bob Dylan Songs

By Douglas Wolk, eMusic Contributor

Half a century into his career, Bob Dylan's amassed a gigantic catalogue of original material. He's released a string of greatest-hits albums, and his touring repertoire is well over 100 songs. But he's also got some remarkable songs that have been overshadowed by their companions - songs that, in anyone else's career, would be high points. In honor of the release of his 35th(!) album, Tempest, we invite you to listen to these overlooked gems in… more »

Six Degrees of Bob Dylan’s Desire

By Yancey Strickler, eMusic Contributor

It used to be easier to pretend that an album was its own perfectly self-contained artifact. The great records certainly feel that way. But albums are more permeable than solid, their motivations, executions and inspirations informed by, and often stolen from, their peers and forbearers. It all sounds awfully formal, but it's not. It's the very nature of music — of art, even. The Six Degrees features examine the relationships between classic records and five… more »

Icon: Bob Dylan

By Douglas Wolk, eMusic Contributor

Bob Dylan didn't get to be the greatest living songwriter by repeating himself. He's reinvented his style and technique with nearly every record he's made in the course of his half-century career; he's been the political spitfire of The Times They Are A-Changin', the mysterious joker of The Basement Tapes, the domestic ruminator of New Morning, the indignant holy roller of Slow Train Coming, the aging Romeo of Time Out of Mind. The only constants… more »

They Say All Music Guide

A vastly underappreciated celebration of faith with a traditional black gospel approach on original Dylan songs that, along with the exclusively gospel concerts he was giving at the time, scared his longtime fans and record company half to death, but really ended up being a lovingly done one-shot that featured a classic, “What Can I Do for You?” – Thom Granger
