A casualty of our belief that other people's lives should make sense
1996 | Label: Columbia

The luxury of revisiting Nas's second album some 15 years later is that reappraisal allows for tempered expectations. In the aftermath of Nas's debut, Illmatic, still one of the most economically compelling pieces of music ever recorded, It Was Written was bizarre, showy and incongruous. It was neither a celebration of new status nor, as many fans lamented, a renewal of old themes. This was an entirely different Nas, one who presented himself as a cosmopolitan, Mafioso kingpin rather than the kid with the chipped-tooth smile dreaming of life beyond the "Rotten Apple."

Despite shattering Nas's persona as rap's great prodigy, It Was Written remains a consistent, occasionally thrilling album. "Escobar status" didn't make him lazy, as evidenced by the meticulous gangland tales of the Havoc-assisted "The Set-Up" or "Take it in Blood." "Affirmative Action" might have benefited from a tougher beat, but hearing Nas hatch plans alongside A.Z., an on-form Cormega and Foxy Brown is mob rap at its best. Schmaltzy Sting sample notwithstanding, "The Message" is an intoxicating mess of "one love/one king," TV-in-the-headrest fantasy. Even its erratic moments, like the first-person, Nas-as-gun experiment "I Gave You Power" or the pop-lunge "If I Ruled the World" seem… read more »

4.5 out of 5

This is a great album in which Nas displays his storytelling skills and intelligent lyrics. Add to this outstanding production and you have a can't miss album. My only complaint would be that the same beat on 2pac's "All eyes on me" is used on Street Dreams when 2pac's album was released shortly before this album.

One of the Best

I originally bought this album as a 14 year old kid who was just getting into hip hop, and I find myself still loving it to this day. On this album Nas went from hungry kid (Illmatic) into hip hop superstar.

Classic Material

flysi3000

This album is an essential component of any hip-hop fan's collection, and required listening for anyone who summarily dismisses the genre as lacking in substance. Nas' vivid storytelling and intricate lyrics helped the East Coast's re-emergence into a rap scene that was dominated by the Gangsta rap of the West Coast.

New This Week: Common, Tegan & Sara, Radiohead and More

By J. Edward Keyes , Editor-in-Chief

The last week before the holidays, and we are down to a trickle as far as new arrivals. This will be the last New This Week roundup of 2011. Where does the time go? Not into some kind of bottle, I can tell you that much. And now, one last run through the stacks before we reconvene in 2012. Common, The Dreamer, The Believer: The first track on this record features Maya Angelou. The second… more »

They Say All Media Guide

For his second album, It Was Written, Nas hired a bunch of hip-hop’s biggest producers — including Dr. Dre, DJ Premier, Stretch, and Trackmasters — to help him create the musical bed for his daring, groundbreaking rhymes. Although that rhyme style isn’t as startling on It Was Written as it was on his debut, Illmatic, Nas has deepened his talents, creating a complex series of rhymes that not only flow, but manage to tell coherent stories as well. Furthermore, Nas often concentrates on creating vignettes about life in the ghetto that never are apolitical or ambivalent. This time around, the production is more detailed and elaborate, which gives the music a wider appeal. Sometimes this is a detriment — Nas sounds better when he tries to keep it street-level — but usually, his lyrical force cuts through the commercial sheen. Combined with the spare but deep grooves, his rhymes have a resonance unmatched by most of his mid-’90s contemporaries. Because, no matter how deep his lyrics are, his grooves are just as deep and those bottomless funk and spare beats are what make It Was Written so compulsively listenable. – Leo Stanley
