Bob Dylan, World Gone Wrong
Label: Columbia

Another home-recorded solo-acoustic album of folk songs and country blues, all of them thoroughly Dylanized. It's a despairing set of material — the refrain of "Delia" goes "all the friends I ever had are gone" — but Bob's alligator-skin voice crackles with heat, and his guitar playing is his sharpest in decades, especially on Blind Willie McTell's acid-spitting "Broke Down Engine."

Key part of the late-career renaissance

LouietheKing

Of the two late folk albums, World Gone Wrong is more focused tonally--there's a bleak intensity to it which makes it a true statement of vision from D. Highly recommended

an understated gem

chachlate

for anyone in love with dylan's first few records, this tasteful collection of songs is a startling return to form. "good as i been to you" is an excellent record but comes across as a bit of a test run for this, a fully realized acoustic record such as dylan had not made since his earliest years. dylan fans, get it quick.

A welcome addition to acoustic Dylan

Solid songs all around. Dylan acoustic is my favorite way to hear him.

May Your Song Always Be Sung

By Douglas Wolk, eMusic Contributor

"Singer/songwriter" has gradually come to be applied to nearly everyone who both writes and performs songs, especially if they happen to play guitar and are billed under their own names rather than as members of a band. But it used to have a particular meaning, in some cases, that was a little more specific: a singer who performed self-written songs that were meant for other people to sing, too. That's a tradition that's not nearly… more »

Top 10 Overlooked Bob Dylan Songs

By Douglas Wolk, eMusic Contributor

Half a century into his career, Bob Dylan's amassed a gigantic catalogue of original material. He's released a string of greatest-hits albums, and his touring repertoire is well over 100 songs. But he's also got some remarkable songs that have been overshadowed by their companions - songs that, in anyone else's career, would be high points. In honor of Dylan's 70th birthday, we invite you to listen to these overlooked gems in isolation, away from the… more »

Icon: Bob Dylan

By Douglas Wolk, eMusic Contributor

Bob Dylan didn't get to be the greatest living songwriter by repeating himself. He's reinvented his style and technique with nearly every record he's made in the course of his half-century career; he's been the political spitfire of The Times They Are A-Changin', the mysterious joker of The Basement Tapes, the domestic ruminator of New Morning, the indignant holy roller of Slow Train Coming, the aging Romeo of Time Out of Mind. The only constants… more »

They Say All Music Guide

If Good as I Been to You was a strong traditionalist folk record, World Gone Wrong was an exceptional one, boasting an exceptional set of songs given performances so fully realized that they seemed like modern protest songs. Much of this record is fairly obscure to anyone outside of dedicated folk fans; “Delia” (covered by Johnny Cash the following year) and “Stack-A-Lee” are the most familiar items, yet they’re given traditional readings, meaning that the latter doesn’t quite seem like “Stagger Lee.” But even if these are traditionalist, they’re spirited and lively renditions, and Dylan seems more connected to the music than he has in years. That sense of connection, plus the terrific choice of songs, makes this one of his best, strongest albums of the second half of his career. – Stephen Thomas Erlewine
