Michael Jackson, HIStory – PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE – Book I
1995 | Label: Epic

Michael Jackson didn't do himself any favors by configuring HiIStory as a double CD. Its first disc unfurls a hugely impressive collection of greatest hits. The second offers 15 new songs that don't fare at all well by comparison. Jackson produced a lot of the new work himself, and since self-awareness and self-criticism have never been his strong points, it's small wonder many tracks stumble into self-indulgence.

The new music's main draw came in “Scream,” a tete-a-tete between Michael and sister Janet (then a bigger, and far hipper, star). Unfortunately, their union sounded shrill and overblown, even as produced by Janet's normally on-point sonic sculptors, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. From there, things go downhill fast. Much of the music plays either to Jackson's cornier or more self-righteous sides. For the former, we have “Earth Song” (a condescending environmentalist tome). For the latter, there's “Tabloid Junkie” (about his problems, not ours), plus a swipe at an old business manager who allegedly did him wrong: “D.S.”

The cover of “Come Together” once again represents a strained attempt for Jackson to sell himself as a one man Fab Four, while “You Are Not Alone” (penned by R. Kelly) and “Childhood” (from the movie “Free… read more »

thiscouldbebetter

The King of Pop reaches from the grave, no matter how much he is criticized by the media and by the society he contributed to generously. The body of the man maybe dead, but he will remain the King of Pop from now to the end of humanity. All I have to say about the album is that it is priceless, figuratively speaking. It deserves recognition for the classic hits that are compiled on it. The "album only" labels should be removed, though. It doesn't matter if they will have a greater sell-out than the other tracks. EVERY song should be available for individual sale. If you really want to make a profit off of us, try winning our respect first. Emusic can do way better than this. I approve this album. I disapprove of this site. I've only been on it for three days now, and I can say I was disappointed to begin with by the dearth of artist songs and albums available. Step up your game emusic. Do you "even care about us"?

Smile is a great cover!

What in the blue hades is isaacmusicman babbling on about? I honestly think that Michael's ballads are stronger than half the stuff he did in the 80's. It's like Madonna. When they tackled more serious subject matter, their music got better. But I guess some people just want to hear "party music". Your loss.

Both good and bad songs

EMUSIC-021815E7

For a greatest hits album this is missing a lot of his best songs: Dirty Diana, Human Nature, Smooth Criminal, etc. In their place are newer songs that would are far from MJ's best. Definitely not worth it to buy the whole album just for the good songs if you can avoid it. It's a shame that you we're not allowed to download some of these songs without buying the whole album.

Kind Of Scary!!!!!

isaacmusicman

I really think that if it wasn't for the classic stuff on here, not too many people would have bought this album. I used to work in a music store at this time, trust me, people talk. I know that Mike had a lot going on with him at the time, and I guess that's why he comprised these songs here. I guess I got some of them, but at the same time, you can tell that dip became more like a slide! This was not his best work at all, and after this he never fully recovered! "Childhood" and "You Are Not Alone" were straight up annoying, something that Mike at this time musically was very good at. Sad! The reason why I said that this was scary, well, have you ever listened to "Smile"? Well, if you did, you know what I'm taking about. If you are willing to take a risk because of the classics, it's up to you, otherwise don't bother!!!

One Song...

jugaluck

I only want one song. But it's album only. What's the point of having individual credits? I guess that I can buy the entire album, then delete it all except for one song, but that's very expensive. I'll pass.

Lame

pocaroba

And even here I am asked to buy the greatest hits just to buy this album. If that isn't big label thinking at its worst I don't know what is. Do I have to buy a car to get the tires? Stupid stupid stupid. It has been 14 years since this came out and I have still never heard it. Way to go Sony!

2011: I Shall Be Released

By Douglas Wolk

May 23, 2011, was a small landmark for pop music. Lady Gaga had announced on New Year's Eve that her new album Born This Way would be released on that date, and the drumbeats heralding it kept building; it sold more than 1.1 million copies in its first week (partly thanks to massive discounting). It wasn't the biggest release date for any album ever, and it's not the last release date that will ever be… more »

They Say All Media Guide

Michael Jackson’s double-disc HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I is a monumental achievement of ego. The first disc is a collection of his post-Motown hits, featuring some of the greatest music in pop history, including “Billie Jean,” “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough,” “Beat It,” and “Rock with You,” and it’s filled with enough prime material to be thoroughly intoxicating. The second disc, consisting entirely of new material, is easily the most personal album Jackson has recorded, as references to his scandals permeate almost every song, creating a thick atmosphere of paranoia. Occasionally, Jackson produces some well-crafted pop that ranks with his best material: R. Kelly’s “You Are Not Alone” is seductive and “Scream” improves on the slamming beats of his earlier single “Jam.” – Stephen Thomas Erlewine
