If I Were to Buy One Clash Album...

Chickenhawk

It would be this. The soundstage is broad and the performances could not be bettered. I'm unaware of the venue, but wish I'd been there. All of the classic Clash pieces are here and then some. Albums like this will help increase awareness of a wonderful band that has moved into history. About 3.5 hours of non-stop joy. Five stars.

Fine Overview

On Broadway is a mostly satisfying overview of the most crucial songs from "the only band that really matters."

Clash on Broadway is a fine triple-disc, 63-song box set covering the Clash’s entire career. Although there are very few rarities, it does include all of the band’s important songs, including cuts that were only available on EPs, singles, and B-sides. As a result, it’s a useful box set even for dedicated fans, presenting the band’s evolution in a logical fashion. Nevertheless, compilations don’t always suit the Clash well because The Clash and London Calling were powerful individual works in their own right, and hearing them cut up in this fashion alters their impact. Even so, for anyone looking for one set illustrating why the Clash were a great, important, and influential band, Clash on Broadway explains exactly why. – Stephen Thomas Erlewine
