Teenage Graceland

By Wayne Robins

After Elvis went into the Army and before the British Invasion, the years 1958-63 were rock's forgotten years. But they were the years that shaped the musical tastes of baby boomers and of acts from the Beatles and Rolling Stones to Bruce Springsteen and the Ramones. Hear the dance sensations, the one-hit-wonders, the girl groups and doo-wop singers, surfers and rockabilly twangers, the birth of Motown, the evolution of R&B into soul and so much… more »

They Say All Media Guide

Thirty years after its recording, the complete set from the second of two concerts given by Elvis on June 27, 1968 was released by RCA as Tiger Man. Only a handful of tracks had been previously released; three were edited into the first concert, broadcast by NBC (and later released on record by RCA) as the knockout Elvis TV Special. The newly compiled material displays Presley even more confident and relaxed than at the earlier show. In fact, he may be a bit too relaxed. He flubs a few songs, forgets lyrics (even on “Heartbreak Hotel”), banters excessively with the audience and his band, and appears to treat the entire show as one of his relaxed recording sessions instead of a performance. For most Elvis fans, this is a goldmine, yet another revelation into his career to file alongside One Hundred Years from Now and Sunrise in RCA’s massive reissue campaign. For everyone else, it’s simply too disjointed and incoherent to stand on its own worth next to the original Elvis TV Special album. – John Bush
