Cute

Bromberg is a delightful player, but he likes to make what I call "cute" music, at time sounding way too gimmicky for my ears. But doubting his raw talent, but it takes more than raw talent to make great music and to me this just doesn't qualify.

Terrific! but...

To complete this great compilation, get to Bromberg's "Best Of" album and download "The New Lee Highway Blues" and "Wonderful World." For me, THAT'S a complete "Retrospective."

Bromberg has never recorded a bad cut. Really.

The Best Song Ever

When we saw Bromberg at Merlefest this year, he did "Nobody's" with the Wailing Jennys singing backup and it was the most beautiful thing I have ever heard. The version here carries the same feeling, beautiful and touching. I think he's a true musical genius.

The Player: Retrospective is an incomplete but effective summary of David Bromberg’s career, containing the majority of his best songs. It is true that some personal favorites, such as “The New Lee Highway Blues” may be missing — and this may be a sticking point, since Bromberg fans are very dedicated — but most of the important songs — “Sharon,” “The Hold Up,” “Mr. Bojangles,” “Sammy’s Song,” “The Joke’s on Me,” “Wallflower” — are here, making this a fine replacement for the earlier compilation, Out of the Blues, as well as a good introduction for the curious. – Stephen Thomas Erlewine
