An all-star date that's even more than the sum of its considerable parts
Label: Columbia/Legacy

In addition to being a major valve-trombonist and a highly storied composer-arranger, Bob Brookmeyer is one of the great collaborators in all of jazz. He brought all those skills to bear on this remarkable all-star album from 1964: as if a band that features the young Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, Elvin Jones and Gary Burton weren't enough, Brookmeyer brought in two superstars in rare appearances as sidemen, Stan Getz and Tony Bennett (the latter on "Day Dream"). Yet even more than the musicians, it's the leader's writing — full of unexpected twists and turns and surprising time signatures — that makes this a classic album.

great session

This album is worth a listen just for the sidemen. At the time of recording Herbie Hancock was a young man. Elvin Jones and Ron Carter were also young lions. Getz and Brookmeyer play great too.

Too Swinging, But Not Bad!!!!

This is way to swinging for my taste, but admid the musicians on this set, it passes. Mr. Brookmeyer's compositions are interesting, but to me it has no POW. I prefer the fusion and funk jazz, but if you like the classic straight up jazz, this is not a bad set to download.

This somewhat obscure session was reissued on LP by Columbia in 1980. Valve trombonist Bob Brookmeyer and tenor-great Stan Getz (who had played together regularly a decade prior) had a reunion for this date, performing five standards and three Brookmeyer originals. The young rhythm section (pianist Herbie Hancock, vibraphonist Gary Burton, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Elvin Jones) uplifts what would have been a fairly conventional (although high quality) bop date. – Scott Yanow
