Baroque for the historically uninformed

haineko_blue

Even with the Harpsichordist's strong attempts, Matthew Wilkie ignores, and in a way, ignorantly refuses the historical performance practise movement and that is a disgrace. To release a CD of purely baroque music for the bassoon and not even attempt to play it in a thought-out, researched manner is disgraceful. However, I must admit that his technique is flawless, if a little too even. Character is just as important as technical and timbral fluency, and if one must be slightly sacrificed for another, then so be it. Overall, despite the excellent technique of the performer, this CD is a failure for the classical music world and further exacerbates the notion that the baroque is light-hearted and boring.

Even with the Harpsichordist's strong attempts, Matthew Wilkie ignorantly refuses to play in a historically informed style. It's been around for quite some time now - it's time to catch up, Matthew. To go to the effort of transposing these sonatas down in the style of the time, but then not even attempt to play them in a historically-informed manner, is ridiculous. However, I must admit that his technique is flawless: to the point of being too even. Character and musicality are just as important as technical and timbral fluency, and if one must be slightly sacrificed for another, then so be it. Overall, despite the excellent technique of the performer, this CD is a failure for the classical music world and further exacerbates the notion that the baroque is light-hearted and boring.
