One of the great albums of the '80s

jdship

This is one of the great unsung records of the 1980s, up there with the Pontiac Brothers' "Johnson" and "Mary Jean & 9 Others" by Marshall Crenshaw. The opener was the semi-hit, and it's a great one, but the best song here -- by a nose -- is "Everywhere," a lovely ballad supposedly written the day after John Lennon was shot. Translator never made a bad record, but this is the only one (as a whole) that the band's earnestness never threatens to tip over.

good album by a good band

Everywhere That I'm Not has a tendency to overwhelm the rest of this album, and that's a shame. As a single, it hit at the right time to help people deal with the times. But the rest of the album does a good job of showing how pop bands could respond to punk without necessarily becoming "new wave" and synth happy.

Translator’s signature song, “Everywhere That I’m Not,” a sweet slice of new wave guitar pop mourning the loss of John Lennon, is included here, along with nine other tracks that simultaneously celebrate love and alienation; naturally, it was critically embraced during the post-punk era. The recording is a completely apt portrayal of the San Francisco guitar band sound from the era — shrouded in darkness and masked with a perky new wave drum sound. – Denise Sullivan
