Neither self-consciously contemporary nor proactively retro, Paul Burch makes timeless American roots music. Since the mid-'90s, the Nashville stalwart has parlayed his proficiency on a range of instruments — he plays guitar, drums, vibes, electric piano and harmonica here — into recordings that draw upon bluegrass, ragtime, swing and other early-20th-century sounds while keeping a foot planted firmly in the present day.
The modernity stems from Burch writing sophisticated original material rather than rehashing simple staples; only one of this disc's 14 cuts are covers. The best of them — the twinkling and swaying "Little Bells," the richly melodic love song "Vena Amore," the Buddy Holly-esque charmer "Lead Me On" — feel effortless, Burch's relaxed vocals and easy tempos casting an almost irresistible spell. The rambling story-song "Ballad of Henry & Jimmy" is similarly sweet but more ambitious lyrically, stretching for five and a half minutes. And when he pushes the edges of his voice on "Please Send for Me," he reaches a soulful fever without breaking the record's smooth tone. A top-rate cast of co-conspirators, including Dennis Crouch, Jen Gunderman, Tim O'Brien and Kelly Hogan, fills in Burch's sketches with lovely and tasteful colors and accents.
