A quirky and uncannily strange little synth-pop romp
2009 | Label: Peacefrog Records / Peacefrog Digital Ltd.

Only a town like Gothenburg could produce a pop prospect as unusual as Little Dragon. The small Swedish city has over the years brought us a variety of inventive pop, from Air France's zesty electronica to Sally Shapiro's Italo-influenced dance, Pacific! and the Tough Alliance — all under the watchful eye of godfathers the Knife and Jose Gonzales. Little Dragon stepped up to the national stage with their 2007 self-titled debut, which won them a devoted crew of converts to their quirky cause — among them TV On The Radio, who snapped the group up for a support tour.

And their sophomore effort sees the band sidestep difficult second album syndrome and offer instead a more refined version of their debut. Introductory track “A New” sets the tone; it's a vaguely tribal pop gem that recalls Gang Gang Dance or Rainbow Arabia and, like much of the LP, deftly combines the organic with the digital, the analogue and electronic. The album’s name alludes to this approach, and the way the band attempt to combine machines that sound human with humans playing machine-like parts. Witness the playful and personified, almost child-like synths of “My Step”… read more »

So Good

RiddimSelektor

Feather and Blinking Pigs are the standout tracks for me, but the whole album is solid from start to finish. A real treat.

brilliant, unclassifiable, deeply soulful

bombycilla

In the last six months, this is the one album I've found that I tell everybody they absolutely MUST hear. Every single song is just breathtaking. They're immediately addictive, but also endlessly fascinating -- subtle, nuanced, and full of wonderful twists and turns. I also think several reviewers have overstated the 80's disco flavor. While it is definitely synth-heavy, it comes off as surprisingly warm and organic (definitely not "icy," as the reviewer above calls it), and though some of the songs are irresistibly danceable, it's definitely not a dance album. Oh, and have I mentioned HER VOICE? Somehow she manages to be earthy and ethereal at the same time; it's just wonderfully soulful and totally unique. I feel a bit silly writing a rave like this, because try as I might I can't do this music justice. You just have to hear it.

doesn't match TWICE yet

fulofunk

It's probably wrong to compare this, but when 'Twice' is the standard you set, it's hard to approach it. I may come back and re-rate this, but first time through, there wasn't a song that caught my ear and made me sit up during the first 45 seconds like Twicw did. No mistaking her gift and the band's potential. I just hope they don't get too experimental and cheat us all out of some gut-wrenching, emotionally twisting melodies

even if you only have a slight liking for retro-electro, download the lot; this album is excellent.

Is it still the '80's?

Muzyk

It could be...I wouldn't mind.

Let this one grow on you.

Let this one grow on you. I see many reviews online stating that it is bad or not as good as the first. I thought so at first. The more I listened, the more I came to love it. Give it a few rotations. Note: The eMusic version does not include the bonus track Tendencies.

yep, this is instantly awesome. It does play to my guilty synthy disco side, but I really want to let it. Haven't followed new music too closely lately, but this stands out.

Little Dragon

By Ian Gittins

Gothenburg four-piece Little Dragon weave visceral, yearning synth-pop elegies that echo 1980s UK electro-pioneers such as Human League and Japan while simultaneously sounding utterly of the moment. Beneath their deceptively languid surfaces lurk poise, poetry and passion. Fronted by the distinctly photogenic Yukimi Nagano, who was born in Sweden to an American mother and Japanese father, the quartet met in high school and began making music when the other three were not teasing Nagano. "They used… more »

They Say All Media Guide

Lest you believe Little Dragon lack an aesthetic spine, their shift away from low-key left-field hip-hop, plaintive piano ballads, and acoustic jazz — a combination that helped make their debut a cult classic — seems more natural after a couple spins. There’s no way around the fact that most of Machine Dreams is icy electro-pop, but it is not as if the truly singular Yukimi Nagano, an enamoring vocalist, has switched to drone mode, forsaking her grounding in R&B. She has kind of perked up, in fact, with her hooks carrying more lift to suit her band’s rubbery rhythms and liquid synthesizer patterns. Just as “Twice” was the standout on Little Dragon, the songs here that resonate most, however — the opening “A New,” “Thunder Love,” and the closing “Fortune” — are this Swedish group’s version of (electric) quiet storm, deceptively intense and even sensual. – Andy Kellman
