Celebrated Mexican guitarists find the middle ground between hard rock and new age.
Label: ATO Records

It's no surprise that Mexican expats Rodrigo Sanchez and Gabriela Quintero rage on acoustic guitars, strumming and picking like greased lightning, and drum with uncaged bongo fury. On their latest album, however, fans will discover that the duo's musical infatuations extend beyond the oeuvres of Metallica and Led Zeppelin and into the realms of jazz, tango, new age, Middle Eastern and the classical music of Europe and the Americas — but always with a rocking Latin tinge.

Indeed, nearly every track on 11:11, with only a couple of exceptions, was inspired by a different guitar hero — from the fiery Santana-influenced opener, "Hanuman," to the decidedly chillier title-track closer, which pays homage to Pink Floyd. In addition to tracks that evoke —either stylistically or through outright quoting — rock idols Jimi Hendrix ("Buster Voodoo") and Pantera's Dimebag Darrell ("Ataman"), R&G wax jazzy in the Al Di Meola-informed "Triveni" and manage to emulate tablas in "Savitri" while under the sway of Shakti's John McLaughlan and Zakir Hussain.

But no matter the source, make no mistake: Everything on 11:11's eleven tracks sounds very much like Rodrigo and Gabriela, who never diverge far from their trademarked locomotive-like flamenco-rock. On a per-note basis, their music's a… read more »

Great guitar work by Rodrigo Y Gabriela. You can listen to this album for all occassions best though for relaxing if you can seat still that long. Guaranteed to make you move around with their hypnotic movements through the chords and beats.

21st Century take on DiMeola and Metal Shredders

mediageek

I'm kind of amazed that Rodrigo y Gabriela are so popular with the hipsters, since this kind of music was the opposite of hip back in the shredder heyday of the 90s. They definitely remind me of Al DiMeola's acoustic work, mixed with 1990s Shrapnel Records shredders, in particular Bernd Steidl. But they're not mere imitators. They bring genuinely fresh ideas to the enterprise with a focus on song structure and melody like DiMeola that often lacks with pure guitar shredfests. Amazing technique is in ample display here, but not at the expense of musicality.

It's f*in metal.

This album sounds more rock-influenced to me than their self-titled album. Because of that... gone are the rhythmic flamenco melodic drives I so enjoyed in the self-titled album. The melodies of Tamacun, Diablo Rojo, and Vikingman elevated me to another level. Present are melodies influenced by metal guitarists. They don't elevate me as much.. but still technically impressive and rockin. Regardless, I enjoy listening to this album in its entirety compared to the self-titled album. The songs are fresh and it keeps a good pace... The production values have also been turned up a notch with improved sound quality over the self-titled. Overall, recommended. They take it up to 11... 11.... Noteworthy Tracks: Hora Zero, Atman

Talented, but kinda .........

I hate to dis these two because they are awesomelly talented, but these songs start to sound the same and I seriously doubt I will listen to the record all the way through after my first listen. Beats kind of blend together from one song to the next and, even with the fast pace, I find myself getting bored.

Excellent!!

No big surprises, just continued excellence!! If you are looking for an introduction to the band check out the first album and fall in love with their reworkings of classic songs. For the initiated, try Triveni and try not download the whole album...I dare you...

i've been such a fan of r y g...but nothing grabs me off this album. and i really wanted to love it. it sounds completely ordinary to my taste. master maqui and chac mool both had a different pace from the "standard" speed riff that sounds encoded into their songwriting DNA--11:11 sounds like it could be someone else. all in all though, a depressing new release in my opinion.
