Horse Feathers, Cascades 7″
2009 | Label: Kill Rock Stars / Redeye

Portland’s Horse Feathers play a crushingly pretty brand of pastoral folk and their most recent single, Cascades dazzles as much as anything they’ve put to tape yet. The title track features a plaintive minor key guitar figure and plinking banjo stabs with the occasional — and dramatic — cymbal wash. The b-side, “Orphan Girl,” is centered around a cooing lead vocal and lush string swashes. This is Horse Feathers at their best.

Heart-breaking

TangerineLemming

"Orphan Girl" is delicate and beautiful: a true joy and a worthy continuation of their "crushingly pretty" sound.

Nice Pair of Songs

"Cascades"--the song--starts off a little disappointing, but halfway through it performs a "Falling Through the Roof"-esque transformation and really hits its stride. "Orphan Girl" feels a bit like something that belongs in a tragedy-laden indie film (while the credits roll?) and it isn't HF's greatest song, but both tracks are beautiful.
