VBR 192 isn't 127

iamiam

While this is hardly the most "Hi-Fidelity" re cording (1960s, I believe) the small group sound results in low bit-rates when ripping using a Variable Bit-Rate based around 192. I'm guessing here, but it's probably what accounts for most of the tracks being set at sub-130 rates. The answer is — especially when using 'lossy' formats like MP3 — to use a 'locked' or 'non-variable' bit-rate at the level you want to end-up with. Why this album wasn't converted to MP3 format through that process is beyond me, as jazz fans are frequently more picky about sound quality than classical ones. Chances are it's the fault of Fantasy / Riverside providing lo-fi converted tracks, as eMusic is just the retailer.

JazzGroover

This album is ripped at only 127 kbps. C'mon, eMusic, re-rip this at 192 kbps!

The great tenor Johnny Griffin made his debut on Riverside with this sextet set which has been reissued on CD in the OJC series. Griffin is teamed with trumpeter Donald Byrd, baritonist Pepper Adams, pianist Kenny Drew, bassist Wilbur Ware and drummer Philly Joe Jones for three obscure tunes, the ballad “What’s New” and a cooking version of “Woody’N You.” High-quality hard bop from some of the best. – Scott Yanow
