Best post-DK effort.

I'd have to agree with lovelylady1. I haven't been a big fan of Jello's other collabs (his spoken word, however = awesomeness), but I really like this one-great punk sound, bringing me back to the Dead Kennedys pre-kicking Jello out and stealing his schtuff. The man appears to be back.

Easily Biafra's Best Post DKs LP

Judging from the reviews on here - Biafra's ability to annoy the right people remains untouched. His voice is stellar, and for a change his backing band isn't trying to sound like the DKs ala the "jellvins" or "no wto combo." the keyboardist from Faith no More is on here, and that is the level of musicianship accross the board. A great buy and well worth the credits.

Funny, I thought this is where we posted album reviews, not our skewed soap-box political views. Silly me. As for the album, I have not listened to it completely through, but what I have heard has struck me pretty standard-fare punk rock, and will probably sound pretty familiar to fans of older works. Nothing groundbreaking here, and perhaps even a little derivative, but if you're already a fan, you will probably find some enjoyment in at least some of the tracks.

I agree with Fancy Artist. More Bush bashing? Yawn, He's been pulling this schtick since Reagan was in office. "Audacity of Hype" is a great title for this release. He could easily eviscerate Obamessiah as he turns the U.S. into a socialist's wet dream. Too bad he doesn't follow through on the threat.

Jello is still bashing Bush almost a year after he is out of office. I can't take him seriously as a punk, and a defender of the first amendment, since he called for the silencing of talk radio. I think it is time for an old punk to be put out to pasture...

I've only had this album a couple of weeks but it hasn't grown on me the way Jello's collaboration with the Melvins did. The sound is a lot like the Dead Kennedys, but without the hooks or the experimental noise. Its still a solid punk record.

Musically, this album is surprisingly solid. Career provocateur Jello Biafra has assembled a hell of a band behind him, including Faith No More bassist Billy Gould, guitarists Ralph Spight and Kimo Ball, and drummer Jon Weiss. These songs are punk in the acid-fried spirit of riff-heavy acts like Radio Birdman, the MC5, and the Stooges, not Green Day or blink-182. Indeed, songs like “New Feudalism” and “Clean as a Thistle” have more raw power than Iggy & co. were able to muster on the legacy-poisoning The Weirdness. The big problem, of course, remains Biafra himself. His voice is an astonishingly polarizing instrument; for every person who finds his high-pitched barks and ululations captivating, five more run from the room. And it’s not just how he says it, it’s what he says, too. Some of what he’s talking about on this album, like the description of an increasingly high-pressure and low-reward corporate workplace on “Electronic Plantation,” is trenchant and could spark real thought in the listener. The same is true of “Three Strikes,” which tackles the War on Drugs and the prison industry. But other songs, like “The Terror of Tiny Town” and “Clean as a Thistle,” are jabs at the Bush administration and right-wing sexual hypocrisy, released a year after the Bushes left office and the major Republican Party’s sexual scandals broke and were settled. What’s the point? The Audacity of Hype’s cover art suggests that it will be a series of jabs at the Obama administration. That would have been more interesting than re-fighting old battles. – Phil Freeman
