A collection of cooking Daptone singles and album cuts
2009 | Label: Daptone Records / The Orchard

If the intention of Daptone Gold is to prove that the Brooklyn retro-funk label has a far wider remit than it's often given credit for, it succeeds handsomely. Most of these gospel, soul, African-manqué, and ballad selections, were either singles or album cuts — though Binky Griptite with the Sugarman Three's "A Lover Like Me," recorded in 2002, and Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings' cover of Gladys Knight and the Pips' "Giving Up," from 2008, are previously unissued — and all of them are a piece. Not simply because of Daptone's warm analog house sound and dedication to turn-of-the-'70s musical tropes, either, though those help. Daptone has always prioritized singles, and having so many good ones — particularly those that have been unavailable for a while — in one place is a boon. Afrobeat squad Antibalas' version of the Hector Lavoe salsa classic "Che Che Cole" — here in a B-side "Makossa" version from the 12-inch, and long out of print — filters Cameroonian proto-disco through a revisionist lens. House band the Dap-Kings burn through the heated (and, despite its title, fully assured) "Nervous Like Me," previously only available on a 7-inch on fellow New Yorker Kenny Dope's Kay-Dee label.… read more »

Sharon Who?

5from2

Daptone Gold is not only a bargain (22.5 songs for the price of 12), but it is a stellar little collection of tunes that are impossible not to like. If you are someone who thinks that Motown was good, but Muscle Shoals was better, download it now. If you are a person who thinks that the best Beastie Boys record was the one where they didn't try to rap (The In Sound from Way Out), download it now. Or if you're just someone who appreciates infectious funk riffs, download it now. Sharon Jones may bring the attention to Daptone, but as this record proves quite easily, the rest of the bands deserve just as much recognition.

Daptone Rapture!

BudSalt1

I saw The Dap-Kings as back-up band and vocal support to Amy Winehouse at her London Shepherd’s Bush gig in the UK a year or two back. They were a brilliant suave, tight outfit and gave Amy wonderful support on her Back To Black tour. The tracks on this compilation are pretty special too with their easy sophisticated mix of soul, jazz and blues (I agree that hop is stretching the genre a bit!). In the Sixties we had Motown and Stax, the Seventies brought us the Philly Sound and now the Teens are bringing us the confident swinging sounds of Daptone. Long may they continue to turn out music as good as this to hopefully wider and wider acclaim.

A Great Introduction to Daptone

SoulStranger

This is a great introduction to Daptone, and the perfect place to sample some of their outstanding lesser-known gems like Naomi Shelton's "What Have You Done?" My only minor gripe is the over-reliance on familiar tracks by Sharon Jones--the chances are that if you're looking to download this album, you already have some of of the Jones tracks here.

Daptone Rules!!!

vmiller007

I just wish that the site did not feel the need to slight this great music by putting it in the hip-hop genre. Why do I have to go through hip-hop to get to Funk or Soul? At any rate, 23 great tracks for 12 credits is all right in my book and you can't go wrong with anything on Daptone!
