A parade of exuberantly hooky pop songs fighting off undercurrents of sorrow
2008 | Label: Epic

Australian singer Lenka is no starry-eyed ingénue. So what if her cutie-pie vocals stir up images of Kewpie dolls and bunny rabbits? Her voice may be sweet, but underneath the adorable exterior it seems that Lenka is more than a little familiar with life's bitterness: with disappointments, with loneliness. But instead of crying about it, she's figuring out a way to combat misery: with optimism so irrepressible it's like she's flipping sadness the bird. Her self-titled debut is a virtual parade of exuberantly hooky pop songs engineered to help her brush off — if not quite eradicate — those pesky undercurrents of sorrow. She lays out her masterplan in the breezily buoyant song "Skipalong": "Keep smiling knowing all the while/the world will fall apart." The lyrics are sad, but they're delivered with a happy-go-lucky shrug instead of a whimper.

The piece de resistance of Lenka is "The Show," a neon-yellow upper of a song that begins sedately with a softly tinkling piano and Lenka quietly confessing that "I'm just a little bit caught in the middle/life is a maze and love is a riddle." But then the song builds into a lavish production number that evokes the theatricality of an old… read more »

Perfect pop

I've been listening to this every day since I got it. She's similar to Sara Bareilles but with more childlike vocals. Standout tracks are "The Show," "Bring Me Down," and "Trouble is a Friend" (1, 2, and 8). If you like this album, check out Decoder Ring's album Fractions, which has Lenka singing on some songs.

Insanely catchy songs

"The Show" is on near-constant loop in my brain. Until one of the other songs on here sneak in. Great bitter-sweet pop songs. I can even forget about the Old Navy ad. A girls gotta pay the bills, I know.

Those looking to satisfy a sweet-toothed craving for pop music should sink their teeth into this debut, which introduces Lenka as one of 2008′s strongest newcomers. Horns, cellos, violas, keyboards, and vibraphones share equal space here, creating a sound that’s at once lushly elegant and bubbly commercial. Having already cut her teeth with the Decoder Ring, Lenka now asserts herself as a competent vocalist and songwriter, penning three of the album’s tracks while co-writing the remaining eight. “The Show,” “Bring Me Down,” and “Trouble Is a Friend” all brim with the cleverly crafted hooks of a Max Martin composition, and Lenka’s fondness for internal rhyme helps tighten her phrases into concentrated balls of pop melody. The results are pure radio gold, perhaps alarmingly so, but Lenka’s voice helps bring a sense of playfulness to what might otherwise be an exercise in all too perfect pop music. Singing in her endearing Australian accent, she shifts between the breathy sighs of “Don’t Let Me Fall” and the measured, innocent confidence of “Like a Song.” Quiet piano chords and a sparse trumpet riff provide the instrumental backing for the latter tune, and “Like a Song” shows that Lenka still shines when the thick instrumental padding is stripped away, making this candy-coated debut that much sweeter. – Andrew Leahey
