One of the best modern albums period

Not worth the whole album

Electric Feel is awesome. The other two "full album only" tracks are good too.

Awesome Album - no so good live in concert

RG88

My sister mentioned that she heard that they were not very good live and I thought she was just jealous that I got the tickets and she was left without. Then at Radio City Music Hall , her prediction became reality when they kinda cruised through the two great albums with out any real kick ass moments. People got up and then sat down but the electricity of their album was missing.

Electric Feel Time to Pretend The Youth Kids The rest you can live without...

Some excellent ones, some ok

Think a cross between early pink floyd, david bowie, and prince. That's something like MGMT. This album really has some keepers but the abum as a whole hasn't wooed me over quite yet...

love 3 songs

fuent

electric feel gets everyone moving time to pretend and kids are the best songs on the album. too bad you have to spend 12 credits for the 3 you want.

Are you ready?

Worth it if you're looking for a full album of indie pop. If you only expect to like a track or two, you might wish for some credits back.

Electric Feel for 3 credits

LocoUlysses

Time to Pretend and Kids are both available on the Time to Pretend EP here on Emusic (at time of posting) so why would they be "Full Album Only"?? So basically you'd be paying 3 credits for Electric Feel. Personally, these guys are a little creepy; I'm on the fence.

I'm sure I'd like this...

chordophone

...if I didn't live through the 80s once already. It's ok, but it's painfully trendy and uninspired. I imagine Sony wants a Flaming Lips/Animal Collective band to try and make some money off of kids in skinny pants.

Solid album to get your freak on

bmill5

MGMT shocked themselves with the success of this album, and it truly deserves the hype it's been given. These is a solid album, though spastic in a good way. You won't find songs sounding the same, even amidst their psychedelic "pop" label. Do yourself a favor and check this out; it has a tendency to hook and pull people in...

The Melancholy Sound of the Synth

By Michaelangelo Matos

Pretend you're on a train in the summer of 2008. You're going west, going back home, having dropped the person you love off at the airport to not see them or hear their voice for three-and-a-half months. (The Africa-Asia trip was in the picture long before you were). You're taking a month to travel from New York to Seattle, via six other cities. You compulsively download new singles to keep you company. You become a… more »

When MGMT was asked by their record label for a list of their dream producers, with low expectations they sarcastically replied: Prince, Nigel Godrich, Barack Obama, and “not Sheryl Crow.” Columbia returned with Dave Fridmann, the producer extraordinaire best known for his work with Flaming Lips and Mercury Rev. In typical Fridmann fashion, Oracular Spectacular is a glamorous mega-production through and through. Drums are massively distorted and shimmering keyboards are articulately layered as he takes the reins, leading the duo through his daisy chain of onboard compressors, delay units, and whatever other mysterious studio gizmos and gadgets he uses to get his trademark sound. Expectedly, the 14 karat polish enhances MGMT’s blend of psychedelic and indie-electro to a shiny sonic gleam, resulting in some of the catchiest pop songs to come from NYC since the turn of the millennium. The tunes sound classic and new all at once, paying homage to Bowie, the Kinks, and the Stones, while updating traditional progressions with flashes of Royal Trux, Ween, and LCD Soundsystem. It’s a wonderful mess of musical ideas, ranging from the dancy disco thump and Bee Gees falsetto of “Electric Feel” to the gritty acoustic-based “Pieces of What,” to the grimy synth groove on the anthemic “Time to Pretend.” With tongues planted firmly in cheeks, sardonic wit is as abundant as Andrew Van Wyngarden and Ben Goldwasser spoof the stereotypical rock & roll lifestyle with lines like “Lets make some music, make some money, find some models for wives/I’ll go to Paris take some heroin and fuck with the stars.” Despite the ever-present irony, the songs never feel insincere and the record is inherently strong throughout, making it a solid start to their career. – Jason Lymangrover
