Huh...

asbestos_bill

I'm a fan of everything else Animal Collective has done, but for some reason this just isn't sticking.

This is not their best work

DC10

While this is pleasant-sounding enough, it's not terribly compelling. There is a dearth of rhythmic activity and the textures aren't nearly as interesting as anything that can be found in their previous electronic-oriented work. Not nearly as good as Water Curses as far as a chaser EP goes. On the other hand, MPP is still awesome!

Nope, I don't get it

MusicalOmnivore

hmmm. not saying it wouldnt grow on me if I listened to the whole thing through, but I dont find anything here to reel me in and make me want to listen to more. seems tedious and pretentious.

Why the low avg rating?

boombox13

Are people rating this album down because they're mad it isn't available in their country? I can't think of any other reason this album would be averaging 3.5 stars; it's a pretty stellar EP. Not as many memorable moments as there are on MPP, but Graze is one of my new favorite AC songs ever.

What Would I Want? Sky

sandisoverrated

Is it just me, or why is it different than the version I've been hearing?? The one with the Grateful Dead sample? The one that's on their myspace page? EDIT: Nevermind, guess it was just me...for some reason track one was cut to 0:29 and then appeared at the end of track two. Fixed on redownload...weird.

RAGE

music4thesoul

what the fuck is up with the music industry?????? I guess this "not available" thing is something to do with the bizarre and antiquated protectionism of the record industry. They just don't get it - make your music available on legal download sites or off to P2P we go. How do AC feel about their music being unavailable for legal download in the UK??? Great album!!!

You Know, Man

GoodBadQueen23

I just really dug this fully. It's like the first Animal Collective album(ish) that I've gotten through in one sitting.

Always interesting

Plus it's a cool use of those five free downloads. Almost as if Emusic planned it that way...

Who Are…Gauntlet Hair

By Arye Dworken, eMusic Contributor

Walk into any barbershop and ask for the Gauntlet Hair, and there's a good chance they'll have no idea what you're talking about. That's because Andy R. and Craig Nice coined the term as teenagers — it comes from a private joke inspired by an old picture of the guitar legend Johnny Winter. (By the way, if your barber does accept the challenge, the duo insists that the outcome should look a lot like a… more »

Six Degrees of The Band’s Music From Big Pink

By Andy Beta, eMusic Contributor

It used to be easier to pretend that an album was its own perfectly self-contained artifact. The great records certainly feel that way. But albums are more permeable than solid, their motivations, executions and inspirations informed by, and often stolen from, their peers and forbearers. It all sounds awfully formal, but it's not. It's the very nature of music — of art, even. The Six Degrees features examine the relationships between classic records and five… more »

eMusic Yearbook: 2005

By Chuck Eddy, eMusic Contributor

Indie-rock in the '00s was hardly the same animal as indie-rock two decades before, and much of the blame should probably go to Nirvana. In the '80s, labels like SST and Touch & Go were built on testosterone. But when grunge went multiplatinum in the '90s, rock bands brandishing palpable physicality suddenly qualified as mainstream again, and the bigger indies started adopting a more effete and introverted aesthetic. So if you skim down a list… more »

Gas, Grass Or Balkan Brass

By Richard Gehr, eMusic Contributor

The best dancers in the house when the Boban i Marko Markovic Orkestar played Lincoln Center's Midsummer Night Swing series in Manhattan this summer were a handsome couple, probably in their 60s, who whirled and dipped with the intuitive ease of longtime lovers immersed in their favorite music. I stood nearby and imagined them reveling in the sound of their Serbian homeland, lost in an ecstatic sea of nostalgia as they danced away the decades… more »

They Say All Music Guide

After releasing one of the best-reviewed albums of 2009, Animal Collective followed ten months later with one of the best EPs of the year, Fall Be Kind. An easily digestible slice of the band at their best, the five-tracker amplifies the circular harmonies of Merriweather Post Pavilion, but substitutes a slightly more laid-back feel compared to the dense, frenzied sound of Merriweather. The opener “Graze” begins with atmospherics and tremulous lyrics, but soon explodes with the same fervor and energy of past AC classics. The second track, “What Would I Want? Sky,” deserves its place with Animal Collective’s best, led by a Grateful Dead sample and including several distinct parts that form close to seven minutes of overlapping harmonies, wheezing and clanking found sounds, and ambient drone. – John Bush
