I love Stars, but they never should have covered this song. Stick with the original... You need Shane's grizzled drunken slurring, and Christy's sharp, weary twang. The youthful voices of Stars makes this sound like a Kidzbop cover. For a good Stars cover, download "This Charming Man" instead, there they hit the nail on the head.

Seriously? Why would they even attempt this?

I'm with ChevalBlanc on this one

Wrong, wrong, wrong. How did they think this was a good idea? The original is practically our national Christmas song in Ireland, I hope they never make the mistake of playing this cover when they tour here...

I'm A Stars Fan, Really, But...

...as a lover of the genius of Shane MacGowan: this version is sacrilege. And I ain't saying the song "can't" be covered, either, but T. Campbell is sure the wrong guy to do it, apparently. Torquil's voice is so clean & sterile--and I mean that in the worst way possible--that they've taken one of the all time great gutter-love-songs and turned it into a pre-broadcast warm-up for the Tony Awards. Thanks for "What the Snowman Learned," and "Look Up," and "Take Me To The Riot" and "Celebration Guns"...but I'm guessing souls have been condemned to hell everlasting for lesser transgressions than this.

36 Songs To Soothe the Pain

By eMusic Editorial Staff, eMusic Contributor

Whether you're happily married or told Cupid to shove it a long time ago, we can all agree on one thing: to quote the one-and-only Nazareth, "Love hurts/ Love scars/ Love wounds/ And mars." Or something. That's why we went ahead and compiled a list of 36 Songs To Soothe the Pain, from the bloodletting confessionals of Neko Case, Bright Eyes and Sunny Day Real Estate to the melancholic melodies of Sigur Rós, the Shangri-Las… more »

eMusic Yearbook: 2005

By Chuck Eddy, eMusic Contributor

Indie-rock in the '00s was hardly the same animal as indie-rock two decades before, and much of the blame should probably go to Nirvana. In the '80s, labels like SST and Touch & Go were built on testosterone. But when grunge went multiplatinum in the '90s, rock bands brandishing palpable physicality suddenly qualified as mainstream again, and the bigger indies started adopting a more effete and introverted aesthetic. So if you skim down a list… more »

eMusic Yearbook: 2003

By Matthew Fritch, eMusic Contributor

Datelines Toronto, Vancouver, Winnipeg and Montreal circa 2003: Something happened in the asymmetrical four corners of Canada. We don't know what it was, but it was perpetrated by Canadians - who are not unlike Americans but, as their socialized medicine, relative humility and widespread knowledge of French make clear, are not like Americans at all. Throughout the '90s, Canada was viewed as an indie-rock backwater, home to oddball outfits - DIY-folk duo Mecca Normal, psych-guitar… more »
