Supremely assured, stadium-filling Big Pop from Melbourne
2009 | Label: Glassnote/Columbia

This Melbourne, Australia four-piece have their eyes on the prize: earlier this year they relocated to London, the better to have a "good crack" at the UK and European markets. They've gigged zealously all over the world for much of the year, from Austin's SXSW in spring to Japanese dates this summer and a run of European festival dates. And, most tellingly, they've created a debut album that shimmers and glows with stadium-filling potential.

Conditions is a supremely-assured, muscular, melodious and avowedly commercial Big Pop record. Guitar-rock that, like Arcade Fire, aims for something epic while also remaining transcendent. It's brimful with crisp, semi-acoustic balladry ("Soldier On") and arm-waving, jump-around anthems ("Fader," "Science Of Fear"), many sung in a stirring falsetto by Dougy Mandagi and all given an easy sonic swagger by producer Jim Abbiss (Kasabian, Arctic Monkeys, Massive Attack).

It's hard to pick a highlight in this sterling collection of songs, but "Down River" is a thing of special beauty. With its climactic cascade of strings and harmonies, it gives Chris Martin something to top next time round. "Sweet Disposition," too, is another icon-rattling triumph, recalling Joshua Tree-era U2. I don't know if these Aussies will ever rock a Stetson… read more »

album only

bwmoeling

wow. one day into the new pricing system and I've had the price of what i bought changed after I paid for it, and albums like this where the songs i want are 'album only.' guess what: i'd rather pay a buck for the song I want on itunes than 6.29 for the song I want plus some other stuff I don't on emusic. affection for emusic dwindling. . .

Take a few listens

WERKS

I think fader is 1 of the better songs but it's a cool album all around.

Distinct Vocals

This is a good album. Sweet Disposition is outstanding, along with Soldier On. Both songs really showcase Buckley's vocals. Love Lost and Science of Fear are good as well.

This album has it's moments. The beginning starts very strong, and plateaus, but then doesn't really go anywhere desirable from there. Then it finishes really well despite the last song being called "Drum Song".

Ok overall, brilliant in moments

Let's get it out of the way right now: "Sweet Disposition" is one of the greatest moments in music history. Download it now. The rest of the album never hits the same high, but regardless offers several tracks well worth their investment. Opening track "Love Lost", in my opinion, is damn near as brilliant as S.D., just less marketable as their breakout hit. Worth looking into, and I definitely look forward to their future growth and evolution.

Amazing Find

This is a fantastic album and these folks have a unique sound. "Resurrection" and "Rest" are probably the best tracks, but they are all great. One of my top 5 for 2009.

guilty pleasure

For some reason I feel I shouldn't, but I love this album. Interestingly my highlights are Resurrection (esp. a little over 3 mins in when it KICKS), Science of Fear and Soldier On (again building rage from a subtle start). They might never make it to 'cool', but damn they're good.

As Heard On TV

By eMusic Editorial Staff, eMusic Contributor

How many times have you been watching your favorite show when a song comes on you've never heard before, perfectly soundtracking the moment that Guy X and Girl Y finally get together? Or seen a cell phone commercial that was all-the-way annoying... except for that incredible, fleeting snippet of an unknown pop song? Well here we're going to try and fill in those gaps, not only identifying some of the best songs from recent TV… more »

They Say All Music Guide

The Temper Trap’s debut is perhaps most widely known for its lead single, “Sweep Disposition,” a pop anthem framed by the influence of Jeff Buckley’s falsetto and U2′s guitar delay. A similar sound also fuels the rest of Conditions, which takes additional cues from the sweeping, effects-laden strains of Bends-era Radiohead and Coldplay. Released in 2009, this album was supported with a healthy international tour, which included standout performances at the Lollapalooza and Glastonbury festivals. – Andrew Leahey
