RJD2, The Colossus
2010 | Label: RJ's Electrical Connections / The Orchard

After an excursion into singer-songwriter territory and a stint racking up film and TV production credits (his "A Beautiful Mind" is the opening theme for Mad Men), RJD2 returns to the winning sound of his post-DJ Shadow dusty-grooved instrumental hip-hop. Opener "Let There Be Horns" is an exuberant shot across the bow — an impossibly funky loose jumble of breakbeats punctuated by late Miles-sounding keyboard stabs and, well… horns. The production on Colossus is impressively layered and warm. Incorporating vocals from a variety of guests (Kenna, Phonte of Little Brother and more), the album plays like an impeccably-curated mixtape of decades-old funk and soul. An assured, welcome return to form.

This is RJD2 like him or not

Halien

He's not going to make another Ghostwriter. If you only like him for that one song then you're not really a fan; move on and quit complaining. This album has plenty good going for it, but you need to let it grow on you a bit.

Not too much like Mark Ronson

Daniel.Cole1982

Not his best offering, but still a solid, fun album

Reminds me of Gorillaz

PoeRock

I find this to really remind me of the Gorillaz style, along w/ The Third Hand album & the new Gorillaz joint Plastic Beach, nothing outstanding, but to me, still a solid album.

Terrible

djsoulace

This is the worst RJ record ever! Never ever do anything even remotely resembling this garbage again!

What the hell happened?

alterdestiny

To the artist formerly known as RJD2? This one is just embarrassing. Skip it.

Hes gone soft

pfunktastic

A man once known for his superhuman technique has either been listening to too much radio or has sold his record collection. If your lookin for his eclectic blending of hip and soul, this aint it. this is a very weak example of what hes capable of. Get a hold of yourself RJ

Wondeful mash-up of genres

powerofpop

The Colossus is RJd2’s latest album – the first on his own record label – and it is a wonderfully eclectic mash-ups of genres and styles underpinned by a strong sense of melody. The basic premise being – what if you took cool music from the 60s & 70s, like classic pop, prog rock and infused it with a modern hip-hop sensibility? Totally works for me.
